I've read alot about different types of shot and the pros and cons of each type. Some people say they shoot the cheap steel fine and others say the shoot nothing but the best. Seams to me I'd rather have smaller more dense pellets and more of them when shooting ducks and geese. Is this where hevi-shot and hevi-steel come in for example? I know there are other more expensive shots than this. What are others thought. I know this subject has been kicked around alot but I'd like to hear it again.

I've tried Hevi shot and all types of steel ammo for waterfowling. I prefer steel because its cheap, but the hevi shot performs pretty good. The range is much better but keep in mind the pellets move quite a bit slower so you may have to practise a bit if you're used to fast steel loads.

If $$ is no issue, give the hevi stuff a try. You won't be disappointed.

I have shot steel for about 4 or so years something like that. It was only couple of years ago I tried 2 boxes of the hevi-shot for geese, I could hardly hit anything. Must have been too used the speed of steel and was not leading enough, who knows. But now I am back to steel and pretty much will not use anything but for me anyways!

Hevi is great, no doubt about it.

But a good patterning load of steel out to 40 yards, will kill every bit as good as hevi.

It comes down to patterning your gun and hitting the birds.

Try Winchesters Hi Vel steel loads at 1550fps. In 2.75" or 3" both work great and are CHEAP! I think they call them X perts. I went with the expensive stuff and it works great also but I found no better than the winchester loads. Especially for high volume shooting like we have in SW Manitoba.
cheers Darryl

Ok, I think we all say steel is just as good so let change this around abit. CHeap steel vs' expensive steel. According to all the magazines if read cheap steel pellats are not as round as expensive stuff and create drag thus, theortically cause poorer patterns than expansive stuff. Any thoughts?

It will create drag on the deformed pellets, but the biggest problem is a lot of the pellets are different sizes so the down range energy for each pellet will be drastically different. You ever hit a goose and have it shake the pellets off lol.

It all comes down to how your gun patterns the load. They can be the crappiest shells in the world, but if your gun patterns them well, you are a winner.

The only reason a goose will shake pellets off is cause he is too far away.

Waterfowler has it right. But it should be pointed out that the heavier density pellets like Hevi-Shot make "too far away" a good chunk further away.

I think there is no doubt in my mind that the hevi-shot has more energy further away, but I couldnt get used to the speed differance again. I have heard that people will put the last shot in the mag as a hevi-shot because they can reach out a bit further when the birds are on their way out. If you are decoying you should have no problems killing birds at 20 or 30 yards give or take a couple with steel. All my goose shooting is over decoys and tops 30 yard shots or so. But if you do alot of pass shooting, than maybe the heavier shot types out there would suite someone better. Only my opinion.

I'll never use steel again. Hevi-shot is $$$ but I already spend a small fortune in time, money and effort to get out there to hunt.....why the hell would I skimp on ammo? Besides....I've had too many birds fly away from what should have been a killing shot......
