Hey .50 cal. people...

Canuck,
but too bad I'm so far east in Quebec where public long ranges are non-existent for all intents and purposes; might by one opening this summer though near me so I'm looking forward to that.

When we stretch our rifles legs out we usually head out to private land or crown land out of the way with a good backstop and a large field of view, Utilizing spotters for safety. Most gun ranges don't exceed 1000meters and for a .50BMG its just warming up. Im not sure where you are but spend some time out in the skirts, get a map of crown land and check regulations where you are. It doesnt have to be a .50BMG to challenge yourself either. Jerry is pushing his .223 to a mile, my wife and I stretch our precision .308's out and .300WM's out to distances most people would not believe. Challenge yourself, if your hunting KNOW your limits and the limits of your rifle and cartridge. It's a hoot!!

As you can see left, I'm in Montreal, Quebec, but it doesn't matter where you are in Quebec because the law is that :
- if you are shooting anywhere outside a range or hunting ground, you are doing something illegal, Crown land or not
- if you are shooting (not hunting) on Crown land that's for hunting and you don't have a hunting licence, it's illegal
- if you are shooting (again, not hunting) on Crown land that's for hunting and you have a licence but it's not the season, you're poaching

Sucks, huh?

The only workaround is to get a small game (gopher, etc.) licence which is year round and find some place to shoot...

I'm using a .308 Win. and have never taken it past 200 yds :( which is why I wanted to know what you 50 BMG guys are up to

That being said and I know im probably going to take a bashing but here it goes. My furthest shot with my .50BMG is "ruff calculated" 2525meters on a rock that would reticle size at just over .5 MOA. I had to jump range it with a laser to get the range I got so there may be a bit of error in it. I was hopeing to get to Summerland again this year to GPS and laser again to get confirmation. Just didn't work out for this year.

I recomend get out and create your own records. Thats where the pleasure is.:D

Well put LRC. Many do yell BS despite all the info we provide. But if we don't show what is possible, we would still be throwing rocks.

It is always great to receive a PM or see a post where someone has taken your info and pushed their personal limits. Just look at the number of shooters pushing their 308's past 1000yds and dare we say it, going subsonic:eek:

Many are now shooting 223's with heavy VLD bullets at distances never thought of before. Best part is they are having fun and burning powder.

I think we will see a number or 308's going to 1500 to 1700yds this year. That is a very long ways for this set up but with the right bullet, it will make it.

Hopefully, we will be able to see the 408's, 338's and 50's side by side at a mile. That will be very enlightening. NO speculation, just some real world data.

I am going to be on that extreme hill a number of times as soon as it melts so let me know which rock/area you were aiming at. I will gladly take a GPS reading for you.

What I have found is that many who call BS, will not make the trip out to see what we can do even when they don't live that far away.

I agree with you buddy, but you missed 1 more important item about extreme long range shooting/hunting.
The continual "ethics" debate that always rears its ugly head by those who either no nothing of long range or who think they are morally superior in their own hunting methods.
I hesitate to post much anymore on any personal long range hunting experiences, or shooting for that matter largely for that reason. A person can only take so much crap from those who really have no clue.
I am always willing to answer and help those with the interest in extreme long range, but now prefer to keep it to direct contact rather than on forums.

I personally never found 1000yd hunting that unbelievable/unethical... If you've got 1 MOA accuracy at that distance then I reckon you can get inside the kill zone of a large game animal.

Rick, I remember seeing some of your hunting pics... Got any of your longest (or one of them) distance catch?

The "ignore" feature works wonders. ;)

Yep, but you hit it to often the guy's full of B.S. win, and corrupt those with a genuine interest:mad:.

As with any hunting the only thing with the potential of being unethical is the man or woman behind the trigger. I have said this before and I will again. It has nothing to do with distance. I can't count the number of times I have gone hunting with individuals who have wounded an animal inside of 100yrds. Gutshot, leg shot...yada yada yada. People don't train or practice with thier firearms, get buck feaver or what ever, Thats why Rick, Glock and I are particular to who we hunt with. The same thing can happen with long range hunting. The key with either is......

KNOW YOUR LIMITS AND ABILITIES AND THAT OF YOUR RIFLE AND CARTRIDGE. practice practice practice

PAY ATTENTION TO WIND & WEATHER AND KNOW HOW YOUR RIFLE AND AMMO PERFORMS IN THE CONDITION YOU ARE HUNTING IN.

IF IN DOUBT, DON'T SEND IT OUT!! there's always another day.

Rick and myself and others have gotten alot of flack about LR hunting and thier perception of it. It is a science with the utmost of thought put into it as those who have hunted with us can attest. If there is something not right we don't shoot, no exceptions. When conditions are perfect for the shot we have a backup shooter ready with a follow up, just in case.......we have never had a just in case shot taken.:D

One fellow who came out with us 2years back was not comfortable with the distances we were shooting but totally amazed at what we had accomplished. Glockmaniac and myself spotted from a ridge above and guided Rick and him by radio into a position where he could comfortably make his shot.

Long range hunting is the most ethical and challenging hunting I have ever done. The animals go down totally relaxed, the meat is increadable as the animals have not been run down or chased and adrenilaned up. They are there doing thier thing, grazing, sleeping what ever then bang, game over. Out of the one herd we took 3 Mulies that didn't have a clue what happened and the remainder didn't run until we walked down from our position on an overlooking ridge to recover our animals.

There have been many times we have passed up on shots and animals due to something not being right...sun position, wind, weather, backstop etc. The sport is about dicipline and training as all hunting should be. There should be no talk of it being ethical or unethical as a sport. In my opinion it comes down to the ethics of the individual persueing the sport.

This ends my Sunday sermon. And hopefully the end of LR hunting is unethical.
