Hey everyone

Hey guys so I’ve been thinking and checking my on line for rifles and shotguns for myself. Was thinking maybe you guys could help me out with some pros and cons with the few I’m thinking about purchasing

One is the Ruger American Ranch rifle in .308, but I’ve been told the mossberg predator in 308 or even mossberg mvp 308 is a good option as well as it comes with optics as well. I’ll be using something like this for hunting
I would recommend a bolt action that has a hinged floor plate for hunting something along the lines of a Weatherby Vanguard

Second is a .410 shotgun, Charles Daly 101 single shot brake barrel, all though I’m not sure where or if I can different chokes for that one to shoot slugs as well. I would like to be able to shoot bird shot as well as slugs from the shotgun but in .410. Also have thought about a lever action .410 but the wire quite expensive I’ve noticed

I have a Charles Daly 410 o/u can't go wrong - ammo I have found at my LGS some I have bought at gun shows

Then finally some .22s, whether it’s a gsg15. Derya tm22, or maybe a lever action or pump action for practise and fun shooting
You can't go wrong with a Savage Mark II it will get the job done - get one with the sights (pencil barrel) will be light to carry around and your not wasting time with a scope - you should be able to hit something between 50-75 yards with irons

Good points about the Savage Mark II. That was my first bolt action and I taught two of my kids how to shoot with it. Mine had a bit of an issue with the magazine fitment and feeding (with 10 round mags only - 5 round mags ok) but that has since been fixed (for the most part - it's still finnicky with hollow points) via an adjustment. But decent accuracy out of the box in a no frills package - hard to beat.

Well it’s not be being “stuck” with a gun per say it’s more I don’t wanna be in a situation where I wished I had a good hunting rifle and then I can’t get one cuz of the silly amendments from the government lol. As I know the food situation will get worse, and me living out where I do - middle of nowhere and lots to hunt.

Would calbela’s be a good place to get some of the mentioned above gun(s) ?

I’ll definitely have to pick up and feel how some guns feel in my hands and arms when looking at gun show, if it don’t feel good in my hands than it isn’t for me. Sounds like a bolt 22 or lever 22, or a 20g shotgun would be a A good start from you guys are saying then

I’ve also been lurking on gun post for some as well seeing what prices are for what and etc.

Before you consider Cabela's, there are a number of site sponsors here who have retail brick and mortar outlets. Why not check out one of them? I can almost guarantee that many of them, if not all, their prices will be better than Cabela's.

Bullseye North, Tillsonburg, Tenda, G4C, Al Flaherty's, Rangeview, Solely Outdoors etc. are all within a somewhat reasonable drive to check out.

You can get good deals off GP if you just look for the ones in your town or nearby. I've found some bargains there. Also for ammo.
The EE here on CGN is available if you 'buy' a membership - look on the "Rules and FAQ" link at the top of the pages. You can get shipment within a few days if it's not too far away. I've bought several guns there, too.
As for "First Gun" I suggest either a Savage MKII as mentioned OR a Savage B22-FV or FV-SR. You want to get a Varmint barrel just for better accuracy in whichever gun. The B22 has a rotary magazine that doesn't stick out below the stock and still has 10-rounds. The 'semi' rifles are not quite as accurate as Bolts, and you'll use ammo faster, too.
As said above, I'd hold off on a large caliber hunting rifle until you have a bit more experience UNLESS you run across a deal 'Too Good . . . "
Good luck shopping the Gun Show, too. You might find a good deal, but I've found most have not been that 'great' either.

AND the gazelle is right about 'Sponsors' on the top of the page. Often some good sales and you can shop several to find the best deal. Last year I shopped 3-4 and ordered, only to find a better deal ($50+) on #5 after I'd placed the order. ;-(
And some might be close to you.
Cabelas might have a good deal if there's a sale, but usually Sponsors can beat them.

PS - The MKIIs often have had magazine issues, old and new models. My B22 has never had a prob and I have 6 mags that all work fine.

Well even being at the gun show I’ll be able to get a feel of some different ones in my hands of how they feel for me, Would be nice to get one with a scope as well. Save myself from searching for a decently priced good one lol
I actually have seen some decent hunting rifles online in 308, 6.5creedmore, and 270 for good deals as well

Yes I was reading reviews on the savage mark ii and they all say they have issues with ejecting or mag issues ya

Ya I’ll have to check them out on my computer when I’m home as it’s hard to see that stuff on my phone like now lol
