Hey Guys.

My names Josh, and I'm from Bowmanville, Ontario.

I'm 19, and planning on getting my PAL soon. Luckily for me, theres a certified/licensed guy in my town that I can take the course and test with. Woo.

I just wanted to say, that you guys have a wicked newcomers section. It explains EVERY question that I had, in plain english.

Saweeeeeeet.

welcome

Welcome Josh.
You will find a lot of helpful people here. Glad you are joining the rnaks of the gun owners. Enjoy the sport.

How did you hear of cgn?

Well, I was searching online for some canadian gun info, and this was one of the links. And the only link where there was information that even I could understand :p

I'm just like wondering if I should get my PAL and then wait a while to get my Restricted license or get them both at the same time.

Hey Josh, I'm in Bowmanville too.

I got my pal and r-pal this summer. I'd recommend getting them at the same time, that way you'll save about $60 when you send in for your license. It costs $80 when you get your license whether it's PAL or PAL and PAL-R. If you add PAL-R later they'll charge you a $60 fee.

Oh right on. That's sweet.

I'm a little lost on what I should do first. (Probably because I haven't slept in a day or two.)

Should I call and take a course then do test?
Or should I buy a book, study, then call and take course, then do test?
Or buy book, study, then challenge test?

haha.

I'd take the course, and their test, since they also provide disabled weapons and rounds that you practice loading, unloading safely.

The courses are a little long (about 6 hours of material stretched into the mandatory 12-16 hours) but worth the bit af boredom that goes along with them.
The Restricted course I took involed getting the course book during the non-restricted class, reading it before hand and then being in a short (2-4 hour) class that involved hands on handling of pistols and the written and practical tests.

The Instructers I took the course under are in Ajax. Two old-timers named Owen Brett and John Black. I would definately recommend them. Experianced and well versed in the laws. Plus, they bicker like an old married couple during class.

I was browsing the Firearms Safety Education Service of Ontario (F.S.E.S.O) and found a licensed instructor in Bowmanville who teaches the course and can supply the test. His names George Nelson. I'm gonna give him a call, and see what he suggests and such.

I'm still confused on what the course is. Does it just cover stuff thats in the book?

or should I get the book, study, take the course then take the test?

course

Hi. Just got back to the computer.

If you take the course, you still have to buy the books.

I suggest buy the books first, and read them front to back.

Do the Restricted and Non restricted the same time.

The course if usually three days, and will cost around $220.

Save some time and money and challenge the test. If you know someone who has guns to show you the procedures, it is well worth it.

I helped my son's friend by giving him lessons and a simulated practical test. He then challenged the tests and only cost him $80 for both (I lent him both books)

His lowest was 94%

I know a few hunters, but I'm unsure if they'll let handle their firearms. I'll have to ask.

Thanks for the insight guys. I can't wait to get my license. :p

Until then? Hmm. Gonna probably hunt or something, with someone who is licensed and within an arms reach of me. :)
