Well after all the canopener jokes I am gonna take some razzing for this I am sure. But I have been agonizing over what to buy my grandson for a first centerfire rifle. OK he is only 4 months old, but he is gonna be a gunnut let there be no doubt.
I thought about buying him something collectable and I nearly dropped two grand on a mint Model 71 in .348. Then I realized his first rifle should be something he can hunt with without worrying about scratching the rifle.
An "as new" 94AE in .356Win came into the shop the other day, no crossbolt safety and with a Williams peep. I only looked at it for about three minutes before I said "sold".
I think that any young boy would love a Winchester lever for his first rifle. And a .356 is a cool cartridge that is both capable and different. Darryl has some ammo and a scope mount that he says I can have....I have ten boxes of 200gr silver tips, two boxes of 200gr power points and the dies and brass are coming.... gonna put it all away for him for a 10th birthday present. :)
I have a bunch of guns already set aside for him but I never had a decent lever.... lessons learned with a lever, a hammer and an open sight are some of the best lessons for a young shooter:cool: .
Now for a nice Spanish double.....;)

That's great!! ......... but what is a .336Win?

Well, at least you didn't buy him a 760. He'd bin ruined for life, hunting with a trailer park gun and all. :D

Kewl caliber! You could load it down to 35rem for a new shooter. Better start stocking up on brass.

You could have bought him a BLR in a WSM. :)

Right after you do a bunch of load testing, and test it on a deer or two, right?;)

Nice choice of gun and calibre.

:D

I think it only prudent to test fire this rifle to determine it's safe functioning.... maybe about four boxes. After all it is my only Grandson were talking about.;)
Probably have to do some load development another few dozen rounds...
I suppose I should try this rifle on deer and bear as well... it is the right thing to do... :)

Make sure you take lots of pics. That will make the gift from Grampa alot more "personal". I carry my grandfather's rifle. It means alot to me. :)

Yeah I hear ya on the brass Super...

But a BLR is not nearly as exciting as a 94 for a young boy... never see John Wayne carrying a BLR.;)
