I just recieved a 1916 Erfurt built m98AZ even though this is a Kar 98 it has a small reciever ring, can I shoot full power loads saftly and what ever commercial/surplus ammo I can find in 8x57? I do hand load but I uselly sight the gun in with factory ammo as a control. Thank RF

Take it to your gunsmith and check if everything is ok. If a mauser is in perfect working order, 198gr is not too much for a mauser action to handle. I shoot only 198gr in my k98k's and g43's and they never complain.

Hi

If the bolt still matches the receiver that takes out one set of variables.

A quick check by your local gunsmith should be all it needs. It would cost about $10 to $20 around here.

Don't sport it: restore it. There aren't enough of those around any more to risk losing another.

BTW, the standard load for the 7.92x57JS at that time was a 154-grain flatbase spitzer bullet, and these rifles shoot very nicely when fed those. The 196-grain BT was originally the ANTI-TANK loading that was issued only to machinegun crews, the theory being that the locking mechanism in a 98 weighs an ounce, the locking mech in a Maxim weighs a pound. Everybody had pals in the machinegun section, so guys "appropriated" a handful of rounds, just in case they got in bad with a Tank, but it was never recommended for use in rifles. It was Hitler who standardised on the anti-tank loading as the new "standard" loading for Mausers so, if your rifle kicks too much, blame him!

I load for my Great War Mausers with ammo that will duplicate what they were designed for, and they shoot very well indeed.

Have fun.

I realy do not have a choice whether to restore or sport the rifle. The guy that gave it to me welded a piece of round stock to the reciever and ground the end of the barrel off. The round stock was some sort of home made scope mount. The stock has been cut down. It is really to bad to do this sort of thing to such a rare rifle (with all the butched .303's around). I would like to know when this rifle came to Canada post 1918 or post 1945?
