I was having an interesting discussion with a couple of CGN'ers last night at the range, and the topic of the US military switching from 9mm to .40 came up. The topic was basically IF the US military were to switch to the .40, what would be the best hi-cap pistol for them?

A little pre-tense...

- must carry more than 12 rounds in a magazine (cannot protrude from grip)
- must be reasonably priced (for the military to buy it:redface: )
- must be rugged and reliable (a given:D )

This is not a 9mm Vs. .40S&W thread. Just interested in the "best" hi-cap .40 for use by the military. And no, I have not heard any rumors about the US military (or any military) switching to the .40, or am I advocating that they do;)

Lastly, the Glock in .40 wasn't even a consideration:eek:

I was watching on some channel the Best Ranger Competition, in the pistol shooting portion they seemed to have H.K's, could have been MK23's but didn't really look like it.

It will be .45 ACP

I'm fairly sure that the US military is going back to .45 ACP but not in a 1911 platform. I saw the testing information posted which essentially ruled out a 1911 style pistol and the concensus amongst most people was that the H&K is probably the front runner at this point. It was an interesting link and even listed the number of pistols that were required over a 5 year period and the number of suppressors. I'll see if I can find it and post it here. I think it was www.glocktalk.com that I saw the article posted on. If you're limited to FMJ ammo you're probably going to want the biggest diameter bullet that you possibly can. That being said, I'm a dedicated .40 guy and have faith in that cartridge (when using HP ammo).

it's logical to assume that they would simply replace the slide/barrel of the Beretta 92FS with 96FS top and whala you have a .40

but no one is going to .40 or .45 for that matter any time soon... :)

My choice was the Para P16 .40. I have read several threads (here and elsewhere) on this topic, and cannot figure out what the problem is with the newer hi-cap 1911's for military use?

Is it the external safeties? Is it "we've already used this design"?

I am sure it is not "you can't shoot a bazillian rounds throught it without cleaning it." In my experience, there's always time for cleaning your weapons in the field.

The 1911 is a solid reliable design, and is available in hi-capacity.

The above comments are worth exactly what you paid for them:D
