Hi, guys. My name is Perry, living in greater Vancouver area. I have sent my application for PAL 2 months ago, and the online status says it is being processed. I expect I can get my PAL within couple weeks. Also, I have been reading various firearm for quite a while. I guess it's about time to decide what gun I should get. :) I am a poor university student, and wanna get a gun good for plinking and small game hunting. I wish I can get gun + scope + some ammo + tax under $350. Please help me decide what I should get, thanx. If you don't find the combo you like, give me your suggestoion too. BTW, among all the options, I actually prefer model 60 and Bushnell scope combo. Model 917 + Simmons scope combo should perform the best, but it is way more ex#####ve than others. Marlin 7000 looks super ugly IMO although I know it should shoot well. :p SKS looks cool, but I daubt if that is everything.
 
Make the stretch and go with the ruger , check out our Exchange for the best price. That way as you grow as a shooter it will grow with you and not just get left behind in the safe as "my first gun" and shot only nostalgic reasons. Beg off on the scope and get something that will stay with you ,the scope will come ,Christmas is coming you know.
 
I am not really interested in Ruger 10/22 because I don't really the look of the metal band near barrel. Also, I don't plan to modify my guns. I like guns performing well right out of box. :)

I know what yo mean that was the one thing that turned me off them as well. Fortunately there are other models that just that one . Also you can just get a replacement stock that dosen't need the band and is just a drop in jog no mod's required.
 
Go with the 7000

Ive got a 795 which is the same except for the tapered barrel.
THeres a bit of a bounce on follow up shots so i think the heavy barrel would be better.
I Dont think there is much better to be had for the value.

I never see any feed jams except when i use ####ty ammo.
Its a very compact rifle that does some truly amazining things
directly from the box with no modification. I cant get over how
accurate this thing really is.
If you get one buy a nice big scope to go with it like a banner
4-12 with a one piece mount.
Only thing to keep in mind is its a ten round mag.
This is not a problem for me. I just bought a few extras.
Personally this is my hunting gun because even with the big assed
scope it is still much lighter than my other rifles without scopes.
Also you can leave one in the chamber and remove the mag. This makes it impossible to fire and the bolt holds back after your last shot.,

Hi, Perry. "...I actually prefer model 60 and Bushnell scope combo..." If that's the one you want, buy it. 'I prefer' is reason enough. Buy the SKS when you want to. However, it's far less expensive learning how to shoot with a .22. The principles are the same. Sight picture, trigger control, breathing, etc., etc.
Oh and it's cheaper to screw around with a .22 too. You can shoot all the rapid fire you want without spending the rent/mortage money. That's why I bought a semi-auto .22 long ago. Cheap blasting.
 
Thanx for the replies. LOL I am actually quite suprised to see so many people who think getting a SKS is a good idea. Are they seriously give me a suggestion? :D

Do you have any previous experience with firearms? If the answer is no, do NOT get anything in semi-automatic, they are not a good choice for a beginner. Go with a bolt action like Rusty suggested above, or drop an add in the equipment exchange "looking for cheap bolt action 22". I ran a similar ad a few weeks ago, looking for one to teach my wife and nieces and nephews with. I had at least 6 to choose from after the ad had been up 4hrs, most of them under $100, including a couple of bolt repeaters. Ended up with a single shot Cooey for $30.
 
Actually I like the look of HB bolt action rifles so bad, but Marlin 980 and Savage MarkII FV costs $50 more than two guns shooting well, Marlin 917 and 7000, around $100 more than model 60 does. I am not sure if they are worth the money. I guess I am not buying a bolt action rifle only because I am new since I got lot of experience with spring air guns already. Spring airguns have a lot of more recoil than rimfire do, and it is two-way recoil(forth and back), and I found they are fun to shoot. I know 7000 is good, but I don't like the silver magzine. I know it can be replced bu other magzines, but I just feel that I like a rifle with wood stock rifle. (OK, I have to admit I am a bit old school, LOL) However, I am aware it's the cheapest HB rifles available. :? A lot of people seem to like guns by Savage arms because they are cheap performers while a lot of people complained about their horrible trigger and bolt with sharp edges. I am just a gun noob with zero firearm knowledge, and I guess I better stay away from those diamond in the rough. :) I now prefer buying a Model 60(a proven performer) + SKS(Looks cool, hehee!) or 917(super nice deal IMO, beautiful gun for the money, expensive ammo) + a nice scope(Maybe pick up one in the states for a better deal). What do u guys think?
 
If you like the looks of a bolt gun...get a bolt gun. Semi autos are fun for blasting but I find bolts, pumps and levers slow me down a little( not much with pumps and levers) and let me think more between shots. Plus they don't get as dirty as semi autos, just clean the barrel with a patch when your done! I like tube mags too nothing to loose and good capacity. -Can down
 
Buy cheap....buy twice. Spend as much as you can on a good quality bolt action rifle. Make sure its inherently accurate. A target grade rifle would be good, like a CZ. Only accurate guns are fun. Once you have a good grip on the basics of shooting and are little more knowledgeable you will be better informed with respect to your next firearms purchases.
 
No, man...No CZ 452 for me. It doubles my bugget on a rimfire rifle. With that money, I have bought a CZ AK. :) Hey, KDX, I like 980 too. Just wondering don't you guys think 917 is a better deal than 980? Model 917 with beautiful wood stock is $50 cheaper than 980 with wood stock while 917 is known for its accuracy .Seems like u people hate the extra cost of .177HMR ammo or simply like .22LR better?
