Hi, I bought a Mosin nagan 91/30 today.
I have a few dumb quesitons about it.

First, if I operate the bolt, do I have to dry fire it to release the trigger in order to protect the trigger mechanism??

Second, is it Ok to dry fire it?

Thank you a lot.

After you've fired your last shot and you close the bolt for storage, you can safely dry fire it by grabbing the knob on the cocking piece and carefully letting it down while pulling the trigger.
You probably could dry fire it, but I wouldn't since these are old guns.

The jury is still out on if dry firing is bad or good. Dry firing *could* cause something to break, so there is *a* risk. Personally I don't think it's a huge risk, but I don't do it anyways.

To release the trigger you can:

A) hold the trigger down while closing the bolt

B) pull the trigger/dry fire it

c) close the bolt, use your left hand to hold the firing pin back, pull the trigger, then ease the firing pin into the fired position.

You can push the bolt to close it, turn it in very slightly (you'll fell a definite step) then pull the trigger.
The bolthandle will snap shut but all the energy will be spent in making the bolt turn down instead of being released launching the firing pin. This is much softer to the mechanism.
PP. :)
