im lookin for a 9mm carbine. cant afford a beretta so the hi point is lookin pretty good. i have heard that on the storm you can change the barrel to make non restricted. can you do so on the hi point as well? kel tech sub 2k might be something considered but they in my opinion are very ugly and i know ati makes a stock for the hi point but not sure on the sub 2k. thoughts on this?

Based on what I've heard about the Hi-Point I'll give you two words: RUN AWAY!

As for the Kel Tec Sub2000, I agree with you on its ugliness, but its functionality is far superior than the Hi-Point. Personally, the part that I hate the most about the Sub2000 is the folding stock. Too bad they don't manufacture a non-folding stock, and then I'd be all over it like manure in a pig pen.

Being a Hi-Point 995TS owner with almost 1K rounds down the pipe I have to respectfully disagree :) It's not going to win any beauty contests but it is rugged and I haven't had a single issue with mine, it just keeps on ticking. I bought used off the EE for under $300 and feel it was a good gun for the money. BTW theres one on the EE (not mine) with the available ATI stock that makes it look like a Storm if thats the look you want.

I'm just basing that on all the bad reviews and range reports I've read about these carbines.

Really? While I agree they're butt ass ugly, I've read reports that have been positive as well. Which ones do you speak of that cast it in a negative light?

I thought I read them on CGN here. Maybe, maybe not.
Either way, my opinion rests that it is not only ugly, but without a stock, its essentially a glorified handgun. But to each their own, I suppose.

Essentially the same thing could be said regarding the Keltec as well.

To the OP. Sounds like a lot of heresay. No doubt you'll see good and bad reviews depending upon the objectivity and biases of the reviewer. For $375 I think it's worth buying so you can get your feet wet with pistol caliber carbines. If you hate it, sell it for a minimal loss. You won't be out much one way or another.

I owned a Keltec sub2000. It functioned well. That's it. Build is super cheap and there is no quality control. My particular specimen had a front sight post that was so off-set, the rear sight had to be maxed out to one side in order for it to shoot straight. This should have been caught during a test firing which leads me to believe they are not 'quality-control-checking.'

Best quality/value (pistol) carbine is the Beretta CX4 IMO (it's too bad that they only come in Restricted config.)

Buy once, be happy. Save your money and get something you will like the first time 'round.

I have the 9mm No complaints Get the 40 you can get pistol mags that hold 10 rounds.Check out the Hipointfirearms forum The guys there go through Hipoint bashing all the time they will tell you what you want to hear.

IIRC, the Hi-points barrel is somehow integral to the receiver?? so it's not a twist off/twist on for a new barrel. Seems to me it was an iffy proposition at best with machining and much thinking:D. I'm also sure someone on this forum actually did it.

I contacted Hi point about this. They said they could do a batch of longer barrel, non-restricted, if the Canadian dealers had sufficient interest.

Really? I wish they would make a restricted run of their 9mm pistol. After watching some of the torture tests (10x worse than what they do to glocks) on those things I would love one.

Why more dealers don't investigate the possibility of doing so is beyond me. Even if a couple of them had to team-up to make the minimum quatity for order, does anyone here NOT believe they would sell extremely well for being a non-restricted "black rifle"?

If the dealers truly have their finger on the pulse of the marketplace in Canada, they would know consumers would buy this in droves. Hell, I'll committ to one right now if we aren't going to be raped by the price difference.

Good luck, the pistols were double the price and no changes had to be made...
