Hi Point Carbines - Facelift!

A stoned teenager in remedial shop class could turn out a better looking, more reliable firearm by the second semester.....
PPPPPPPPUUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEE.........

I take that as a challenge sir!

Well, I've pretty much made it my life's work to try out everything from Norinco. I've been pleased so far, but I've also gone in with my eyes open and haven't paid over the odds for anything yet. My most recent score was a $75 M-93 that someone got fed up with. I hear voices telling me to buy that Chinese Police 9mm thing with the finger-cocker, but I hope the meds kick in before then :)

In the end I'll be glad I was able to own a 1911 clone, a Tokarev clone, a CZ clone, a Woodsman clone, etc. I sure know a lot more about those guns and their designs than I would have otherwise. When I want to thin the herd I'll probably be able to get back close to what I paid for them and then make a decision about getting "the real thing".

pweredbybeer,
My feelings are not hurt and I'm not the least bit bitter.
Good. I didn't really wanna talk about "feelings" anyway :p This isn't brokeback mountain, for chrissakes!

It appears to be common practice and common belief that anyone who condones buying brand name must be a "gun snob".
This is a pretty large and vague generalization. I personally do not feel/think this way. My comment was directly aimed at s**theads who have nothing constructive to offer to a discussion except their seemingly senseless brand loyalty. Like Deckard said (and I'm thinking/hoping he was talking about the same a**holes), the guys who simply post a "POS" or "FUGLY" comment, sometimes followed by a "buy an AR instead!" and leave it at that. Typically these are also the same guys who act the way I described in my previous post.

I find it awfully ironic that very few who have bought brand name firearms feel the need to constantly justify their purchase to those who don't.
That would probably piss me off too, if I spent my $$$ on a nice gun and got razzed for it. Doesn't seem to make too much sense. I get your point, but I wonder why these few individuals who have made the leap to a high-dollar firearm feel the need to justify their purchase to anyone? Whatever turns your crank, as they say.
cannonfodder said:
There seems to be a real trend with the Norinco crowd(or other cheap firearms) to constantly validate their purchase by referecing some ridiculous claim about its performace.
This is the other side of the coin you're talking about, I haven't seen or heard anyone make such claims but I don't doubt that these idiots exist. Most people I've talked to about their Norc's are pretty realistic when it comes to performance and quality (ie; they know they didn't exactly buy a prize pig, if you know what I mean).
cannonfodder said:
Honestly, no one cares. Only Norinco owners care, I guess its themselves they're trying to convice that what they bought is indeed a wise investment and not a lemon.
You're probably right.

What I do look down on and will openly critisize are those who make claims that their entry level or bargain surplus firearms are on the equal with their original counterparts or higher quality(and naturally higher priced) firearms of the same category.
This is perfectly reasonable, and I agree 100%.

Am I a gun snob? I don't think so. Do I get offended when someone bashes gun snobs? Depends on the context of the bashing. Seeing as how this particular case is in reference to those who own or purchase brand name in lieu of purchasing low dollar no name garbage like Hi Point firearms than yes I do get offended.
I think we could debate this for weeks on end, so all I can say is fair 'nuf, point taken. Sorry for my knee-jerk reaction, I thought you were "one of those a**holes"

In regards to the "de restricted" question. I believe the government and your fellow shooters know the term as NON RESTRICTED. That is what I was getting at. To me their called "bush legal". Its a matter of correct terminology, much like a magazine is NOT A CLIP!!!!!!
True, the terminology I used was not CFC approved. However, I knew what I meant, and most if not all who read my post probably did too, so I don't care if I didn't use the right damn terminology. Apples and oranges. I have no desire to argue over my choice of words, I think there are more important things we can both be doing with our time, so whatever. You win, I used the wrong word.

poweredbybeer,
I don't wanna talk feelings either! It makes me cry...(did I say that out loud?)

I agree with your responses to my previous post. I in no way intended to paint everyone with the same broad brush. Again, I agree that there are those who post the simplistic "FUGLY" type comments without so much as a second thought at to why they did it other than to feel better about their brand name purchase. Although some folks who post these short and to the point comments are also of the same mindset as myself in regards to those who pretend their entry gun is the bees knees. I guess others just don't have the will to illustrate that point anymore or just don't care to.

No apologies necessary, I'm just as guilty for knee jerk reactions as the next guy. As for the terminology, well neither of us won. There shouldn't be classes of firearms!!! We definitely have better things to fight over than the proper terms of a useless system.

Group hug! We all win in this Special Olympics of debates. Not sure what this has to do with the Hi Point facelift, but like I said the words "Hi Point" is flypaper for all sorts of scrappers.

I just lost IQ points looking at that POS

LOL!!! Why not just buy a Storm? You know the saying..... imitation is the best form of flattery. (But you still won't get Beretta quality or fit/finish)

Regards,

What kind of brokeback message board is this!?!?!

Back on topic, I'm wondering the same thing as mysticplayer. My biggest problem is my non-restricted PAL, I wouldn't be able to legally own a stock hi-point carbine because its barrel is too short. Are there aftermarket barrels available for these things?

Assuming everything is hunky-dory and we get a pile of carbines and stocks (and a barrel or two for us non-restricted folks) across the border, what would be the total cost of this whole mess by the time I have the horrible thing in my hot little hands? Lemme see; Carbine $300 to $350 landed, Stocks not out yet but figure around $100 to $150, Barrels who knows, guess between $100 to $150, brings the total to...$500 to $650!!!! Cheaper without the theoretical aftermarket barrel at $400 to $500, but still, that's a fair chunk 'o change for a cheap plinker.

I dunno anymore. I could probably build myself a pretty nice 10/22 for $500 to $650. I'll pass this time, I think.

You forgot the barrel install which would be $150 to 300 depending on how goofy these are to work with. Yep, within spitting distance of a Storm.

Now you could just go get your restricted license for a few bucks. Then you could save the rebarrel AND open up a huge range of toys to go broke on like many of us.

Basically, if several were purchased together, landed costs would be in the $400 to 500 range including ATI stock. Is it worth that price for a Storm wannabe and a 3 to 4 month wait?

Found someone that will export...

Come to the dark side poweredbybeer, you know you want to. Think of all the neat toys you can buy right here in Canada.... Just $20 dollars more and about a 10 day wait and you too could have something sweet...

Stop it!! Stop it, all of you!!! I'll cut up my Visa card, I swear! Then I won't be able to buy any guns!! That'll teach you, ahahahaha-ack!!!

Seriously though, I've thought about it several times, and once inquired to the CFC what would be involved, but I've just never followed through. I figured the fact that I have a non-restricted license would limit me from spending too much money (which it does!!!), and I wasn't interested in the hassles of handgun ownership anyway. They're so much fun though *squirm* :(

In other news, I don't mean to hijack but are these a viable alternative to a Hi-Point carbine/Storm lookalike? They're almost the same freakin' price, but at least they'd be non-restricted, their barrels are 18" long.
