I recently acquired a FN Hi-Power and love everything about the gun with the exception of cheap, shiny plastic grips. So I'm now looking for a set of nice hardwood ones. What would you guys recommend? I've heard good things about Spegel but don't know if it's possible to get his products in Canada. What else is out there?

I hear you on the grips that come with the Hi Powers. If you're not completely set on wood, you may want to check out the Gunner Grips by Simonich Knives. That's what I have on my .40 BHP and love them.

I'm not a huge fan of G10/Micarta...it's a nice material for knife handles but I prefer exotic woods on handguns.

By the way, how do you like your .40 BHP? Mine is also a .40 and I’m surprised by how softly it shoots...it has less recoil than nearly every 9 mm pistol I've shot.

It is truy softer than what I expected. But my bigger surprise was the weight of the gun and the spring tension on the recoil spring (both quite a bit more than I expected). That said, I love the gun, and I can't wait to fire it again.

While waiting for the Spegels spend $30 and get a set of Butler Creek rubber grips...based on the spegel's...just a little fatter.

Seems there are no pics of the grips for the HP on the site. Can you post a pic?
...

I'm using a stored picture on my computer, that's the reason for 4 of my pistols being there, but you can see the grips on my BHP at the bottom left..

These are the next best thing to the Spegels, but are very hard to find now as they have been discontinued.

I think the Hogues are a bit thicker than the Speigels. Another really thin grip is the Navridex Micarta from Brownells.

I also think the Butler Creek grips have been discontinued which is a shame since they were rubber copies of Speigel grips.

I found the wood grips to be thin and slippery.
The hogue with finger groves puts my hand in a comfortable position everytime and helps cushion the recoil.

grips

I bought a set of Spegal grips from Novaks and they shipped them no problem. They list photos of each set of grips so you can actually see the ones you are buying. They were great to deal with.

One grip required slight fitting at the screw hole but took less than a minute to fit. I really like them.
