As I wait for my first AR platform to arrive, I know how I would like to set it up.

Conventional scope on top (I already have it) and 45 degree offset back up sights, which I'd prefer in hi viz fiber optic.

It's easy to change out the front pin, to the Hi Viz brand screw in fiber optic, but I can't find anything for a back sight.

I'm thinking about cutting off the top of the peep, to have a round "buckhorn" rear sight, which I'll paint to suit (I've never used a peep and my eyes are getting old and tired).

Your ideas / experience, will be appreciated :)

With buis you don't want any illumination so to speak on the rear sight. The greater the contrast between front and back sights the better.

Local

Local has it right. Tritium or fibre optic rear sights will only distract the eye from focusing on the front sight. With the tritium sights at night you will destroy your natural night vision, making sighting/shooting/seeing all the more difficult. FO rear sights on handgun work because they are not a few inches from your eye and you need to align the front and rear of the pistol. On a rifle the front and rear are pretty much aligned when you mount the rifle.

DYI mod....
I took apart the rear sight, and used a spring loaded punch to cause perfectly placed dents ( left/right) of the rear apputure sight.
Then took some glo/paint, works amazing.

Cool :)

I have fiber optic rifle sights on my 870 (scoped with see thru rings) and I love them, so I know what I want. :)

Again, the sights on your 870 are set much further forward than the rear sight on an AR which is why they too work. With the rear sight being so close to your eye and the nature of aperture or GHOST RING sights relying on a "ghosted" or blurry image of the rear sight, the fibre optics can and likely will play havoc with finding the front sight and naturally aligning it with the centre of the rear sight. A plain blurry black rear sight is what will allow for the greatest contrast between front and rear without distracting your eye.

Makes sense.......thanks :)

If your eyes are old and tired, give the peep sights a try. Most reviews from people with older eyes seem to love peep sights as you only need to focus on the front instead of the rear&front with traditional sights.

Thanks LW, And yes they are :) I've never used a peep on a gun, but did on my compound bow..........where it was very close to my eye.

I just ordered these, to try...........$54 CDN to my door.

Additional info:

I'll be using a pair of 45 degree offset mounts.
The gun is a JR Carbine in .49 S&W, with a convention scope (2-7x32mm Bushnell Elite), mounted in high rings or extra high rings.
IF, there is not enough room to mount the rear sight on the receiver rail, both sights will be mounted on the 7" long OEM handguard..............thus my decision to buy "combo" sights.

Note: The scope is the only item that is currently in my possession. The gun is on lay away at SFRC and I'm not buying rings or mounts until I have it in my hands.

Gimmicky junk to be honest. The human eye can find the centre of a circle the easiest(so I hear and have read and in my experience with similar sights to these I would agree). I see no benefit to a diamond design. The photoluminescent inserts are a poor alternative to tritium sights and again, the rear sight does not need nor do you want it to be illuminated. The extended points coming from the corners of the diamond are useless as an aperture sight is to be sen as a blur only. Your eye is focused THROUGH the rear sight and at the front post(after aligning on the target of course). Those extra nubs have no use which indicates to me that the designer/manufacturer hasn't put any real research or science behind the design.

OK, so what do you recommend? :)

Set...............folding.

I have or have used the following. Magpul MBUS, Magpul MBUS Pro, Troy, MI, GG and G, ARMS, and Mangonel. All worked as advertised but some were better than others. The mangonel were alright but large for what they were, and they are not adjustable. The GG and G were decent quality, as was the ARMS sights I had. I like Troy sights but refuse to use their products after finding out they hired one of the scumbag snipers from the Ruby Ridge incident which involved the murder of innocent people by the FBI. The design is excellent and I never had an issue with them. I like the Polymer Magpul MBUS sights, they're functional, light weight, and affordable. However, compared to the MBUS Pro they are quite a bit larger and could cause issues if you're trying to nest them under an optic.

One thing to consider is whether or not you need and/or want an adjustable rear sight. From where I stand I see no reason for a readily adjustable rear sight. They're Back Up Iron Sights which relegates them to limited range and emergency use. A rear sight that is readily adjustable for range(like an A2 rear sight with the wheel) can be inadvertently knocked out of zero and in my opinion is a pipe dream at best beyond 200 yards.
