so this last winter i rebuilt a old Ruger 10/22 into a tack pusher.
i think ive done everything that can be done to this gun to make it as accurate as you can make a semi auto.
and now im thinking about getting into the single shot bolt action high end shooting.

i saw on a posting some people where using some .22's ive never heard of before.
Sumo and names like that.

where would a fella go to find some high end plinkers here in the north country?
i cant recall ever seeing any of the strange named ones when i was in Cabela's or Wholesale sports last time i was there.
so im guessing its a niche market and requires a smaller mom and pop store?

any help would be great.
good brand, where to get it ect ect.

i was looking at the ruger i built when i was at the range this week and had a good chuckle over it.
28 year old gun.
new DAR 22 receiver, Dlask 18.5" Heavy Bull Barrel, Dlask compensator, Hogue stock, Kid 2 stage trigger assembly, VQ bolt, pin and ejector, TI charging handle, TS bolt release and mag release. i have rebuilt the entire gun with new parts, haha!
 
i know, its like Lego for adults!

i was bored this winter and i had this sitting in the gun safe unused for like 20 years so i thought id start playing with it.
6 months and a lot of money later......
 
There are a couple of Walthers, and the Izmash BI 7-2KO in the EE right now. Go on over to Rimfire Central and do some reading. It's all there.
 
cooper, bleiker, anschutz, suhl, walther, feinwerkbau, are a few of the little higher end 22's that will typically outshoot a 10/22

Soooooooo, didja learn anything on the build?

Find an old T-Bolt, Winchester 69, 52 or so.
Even a CZ 452, 453 and the old Brno's.
A grand would of bought any one of these with the
honor of sport'in'em.
Find a single shot old Schultz $ Larsen as posted on a
recent thread.
The rifle even looks rich.
 
I wanna put 5 shots through one hole at 50 yards while sitting on the bench.
(And maybe at 100 on a calm day)

I guess if I can sink 1000 into a ruger my budget for this would be 2k.

But I would want something I can work on, nothing that needs tools imported from a small mountain village on the shady side of the Swiss alps.
And can't be right thumb hole stock as I'm L/H shot.

I'm almost tempted to take my dads old cooey he gifted me and see what I can do with it.

If you want to go the 'Lego" route and build your own, look for actions from Time Precision, Hall, Suhl 150, Turbo...
 
Have a google for what people are using in 50BR competition then build that. Lots start with an Anschutz 54 action, then add a custom barrel and stock. That'll be about $3000.
All the really competitive ones will be just north of $2000.

Don't overlook the Izhmash CM2/SM2 match rifles....just as accurate as Anschutz or Walther but way less money. In .22lr it all comes down to the ammo.
 
Something to consider is that these rifles will only perform as well as the ammo you feed them.

Unless you want to spend 10 x the price on the ammo, I don't think you will ever see the full potential out of these guns.

Don't think your gonna shoot bulk ammo one ontop of the other just because the gun costs $2000.

Get a reloading setup, and get into .223 or .17 hornet even and build a custom rifle. Ammo will be cheaper. LOL
 
I have spent north of 3,000 on a 10-22 clone and ended up with accuracy that will easy compete with any bolt, however for a lot less you can purchase a bolt action 22 and compete with the 3-4,000 modded semi.

I would like to find a mint dual peep valmet, or anshutz, which can be found for $1,000 or less, much more cost effective for 1/4" 100 yard groups.
 
If you are looking for an accurate, super accurate 22 that needs a little tlc but still shoots one hole groups at 50 yards. Have a tired old Suhl 150 you could have fun with. It out shot 3 factory new match 54 anschutz's of mine. Pm me if you like.
 
Another excellent choice would be a sako quad with a drop in match grade lilja barrel. Sako P94s actoins are used in BR competitions, the Sako Quad is just starting to prove itself, its the follow up the P94s action. you can find them for around $1000 new.

You do have to spend aroudn $2K to get a rifle that will start to compete.
 
Since you are going from a Ruger build and are not currently shooting competitively, I would recommend an intermediate gun and then see if you feel that you need more... Find a good used CZ 453 Varmint and play with/shoot that for a year, and if you feel that you crave even more accuracy, then find an Anschutz or Suhl action... You will want to keep your 453 anyway and will pass it down to Kids and Grand Kids.
 
I just finished my 10/22 also and thought the same thing you did ! I found a sweet little cz scout that had a tight little target with it at my LGS ! You cant beat a cz for the price and they feel alot better than any savage imo
 
I'm of the opinion that the CZ rifles are about the best "bang" for your buck that is available at present.
They feel solid, shoot like a house afire, and are aesthetically pleasing.
