So if you were to buy yourself a high end rifle-say Sako and up-what would you get? A good reason why would be appreciated too. Pretty or expensive wont work.I am looking at Sauer and am thinking there is stuff here in Northam maybe as good or better for the same or less. Or would I be better off to just go a custom build? Say the ceiling is about $3000 and you are dreaming. FWIW I am looking for a leftie bolt so I think that excludes Sako.

I would look at Sako or Cooper,depending on your choice of chamberings.Cooper will have magnum chamberings available within a few months.Either Cooper or Sako can be purchased for $2000 or less.Take the extra $1000,and put it towards a good scope.
 
I would compare the finnlite against a Kimber. Do you want walnut/blued or stainless/synthetic?
I like light rifles. I do a lot of carrying/walking, and not as much shooting when I hunt. I can put on a recoil pad when I'm on the bench.
If I were to get a higher end rifle it would be stainless synthetic probably, and probably in 300wsm or maybe 325wsm. I would want the rifle to be between 6 and 6.5 lbs naked, and under 7.5 lbs with scope and fully loaded. It would have to come with an accuracy gaurantee. It'd be a good mountain gun and capable of elk and moose.

If I were building a rifle, then I'd think about doing a .260 rem in an ultralite rifle. Like around 6lbs scoped and loaded. It'd be a good sheep gun, but might exceed your dollar limit.
 
I know it is not a bolt, but for a little more than $3000 you could get a Merkel K3 or K1. I found a "like NIB" K1 with a Swarovski 3-10x42 Habicht for US$3500. That scope is well over $1000 on its own.

A Blaser K95 might be found at that price point too.

What about a Sabatti Classic Express SxS rifle can be had from Anthony at Trade-Ex for $3000 plus tax and shipping.

If you must have abolt action then you may want to consider a Blaser.

IMHO a Sako is not "high end" - if it is, then what is a Sauer, Mannlicher or Heym? What about a Mauser 98 (new production)?

What do those things go for these days anyway? I have a nice catalog sitting in my locker @ work right now with the new M03s and M98s in it but they don't list prices.
 
Sako and kimber are production guns so I would not put them in the custom class Special order Cooper or Dakota would be a good choice but really $3k on a Dakota would be entry level.

Triebel in Berlin is offering the Magnum version for 12,144 Euros, which is about CDN$18,000.

The M03 starts at just over CDN$3000.

Interestingly a T3 Lite Stainless is about CDN$1850 and a Sako 85 stainless synthetic is about CDN$3000!


edit - Epps has a used M03 African in .458 Lott for $2899 and an M03 Standard in .375 H&H for $2799.

I was thinking the same thing - I checked their web site and the basic 76 starts at US$4995 and the 97 starts at $3395 but apparently they are going to stop production of the 97 soon.
 
So I currently own a Savage 99c 308 and a newer Ruger 77mk II 30-06 that are both accurate and from what I hear reliable. The Ruger is not a pretty rifle but as long as it does the job who cares? What benefit will I see by spending more than 3X the cash on a Dakota or Cooper over my current rifles? Will they be a LOT more accurate and a LOT more reliable? Likely prettier for sure and nice wood would be expected. Must be available in Left Hand bolt and I prefer a DM as well although the Ruger is a floorplate already. Also have a CZ527 and CZ452 in left bolt which are nice rlfles. As close to Euro stuff as I have gone so far.
 
Some people are happy with cheap cars other like expensive ones..both can get you from point A to point B...same with guns.

What do you consider accurate?1-1/2" groups at 100 yards? 1" groups? 1/2" groups?

Will they be a LOT more accurate and a LOT more reliable?

My Coopers do not have wood stocks.
 
MOA currently. Sighted at 200m and typically a 2in group. These are hunting rifles so I am told that should be quite enough. However, I am reloading and have yet to work up a wide range of workup yet so likely that will improve.
