High Standard Victor - Proper Ammo

just got a 2nd hand victor, awesome gun.
but i noticed that the normal .22 ammo that i usually use causes jams every other shot.

shooter beside me let me try some Federal Gold Match and VOILA no more jams.

any recommendation for this type of ammo and places to buy out here in Toronto area. thanks.
 
First of all, make sure it is clean. The most common cause of feeding problems with any .22 is dirt buildup.

We had a couple of Victors at our club and I have a Supermatic and they all feed well when clean. Everything from Rem SubSonics to Yellow Jackets. One of the Victors was missing the extractor for a while and it still functioned.

I'm in the same boat with my 2nd hand Victor...1 mag ammo-3 jams (mostly FTE). I agree with sillymike on the mag lips because when checked the openings on the back pair were way off. I also took my mag apart and was suprised to see more sludge buildup then I've ever seen in a mag. I haven't taken it to the range and tried it since but just operating it by hand it seems to be much better. BTW the Gold Match made no difference previous to these efforts. I do feel though that it is a gun that will work much better not using bulk pack ammo (too much wax). A nicely rounded nose on the bullet will help also. Good luck fnfish.
 
I only have the occasional problem with jams since I started using American Eagle 38 grains. I have a High Standard Trophy. Heck of a nice gun. Yea. Clean the gun as often as you can.
 
It may also be the velocity and power of the ammo. I've had 3 HS , a couple of 41 S&W and Beretta 89 they all function best with standard vel ammo vs
high vel. CCI standard functions well but did not perform that well. I found Eley and Lapua performed very well as well as no FTEs. Cheers
 
Mine doesn't seem too picky about ammo, although its not immune to problems, the most frequent being failure to fire. The odd round shows primer strikes but doesn't go off. I mostly shoot a relatively inexpensive Winchester target load and its more than sufficient for my level of skill. I'm going to have to check out that link on magazines, as I have one mag that I don't use because it doesn't feed right. The cartridges aren't coming out at the right elevation to hit the breach.
 
I find that the magazine in a High Standard needs to be kept clean where the nose of the bullets slide up. to clean mine I pull the follower down with my thumb and then give the mag a good brushing with a .22 cal. brush where the nose of the bullets slide up, then I drop a drop of oil down the inside of the mag at the front. when it gets a build up of bullet grease in the front of the mag the bullet comes up too slow and will jam the nose against the top of the chamber. I hope this info is some help.
 
Try a few brands of standard velocity ammo and see which shoots the best.

High Standards should be used with standard velocity ammo, as they are otherwise prone to frame cracking.
 
Have a High Std Victor & it seems to prefer Blazer to better yet Winchester T-22 Target. Also have a Trophy as well & right now it needs work on it as locked-up up when being put away so time to put it in the hands of a pistol smith. Still it liked the same ammo to even Federal.

High Standards can be a pain if the magazines aren't tweaked and adjusted to feed properly.

Other than that, use only standard velocity ammo, these are target pistols with tight-tolerance chambers and barrels: I find that both CCI standard velocity and Fiocchi standard velocity are very reliable and accurate for the dollar, of course, there is also the high-end target (Eley, Aguila, Lapua, etc.)stuff if you have deep pockets--I'm sure your Trophy would love them :)
 
"...the normal .22 ammo..." .22's are like that. Semi-auto rifles or pistols. You have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your pistol will both shoot well and cycle the action. The cost or make of said ammo means nothing either.
 
Second hand High Standard Victor. Flawless with CCI Standard Velocity, CCI Green Tag, CCI Match Pistol and other Match grade rim fire ammo. No problems, no mag tweaking. Thanks for the tip on the high velo ammo. Oh BTW, this pistol is stupid accurate!

my high standard sharpshooter feeds anything 100% as for the bulk packs of the wild cats and the 333 or 555 winchesters i let my buddy use it with a fresh box of the 555 bulk pack winchester he just kept loading mags and went through the whole box in one afternoon with no cleaning and no problems with the pistol either the biggest problems with the high standards is the mags tune em for the gun and 100 % reliable and maybe my pistol is out of the norm but it is very accurate with the bulc pack ammo as for the odd failure to fire its the ammo not the gun next time you get some rounds that fail to fire in the high standard try them in another gun chances are they wont fire in them either
 
Blazers have always worked flawlessy for me for plinking, and seem to be much better quality than Remington or Winchester; 500rnds for $23.00 - come to think of it, i cant remember ever having a dud yet either with them.
