It's shooting about 12" high at 100 yds.

I've looked around and don't see any replacement front sights advertized for it. Anyone know of a source? Another sight that is a straight swap or an easy modification?

Aye caramba!

Knowing that...

Difference in front sight blade height is equal to:

(distance between rear and front sight X distance between poi and bull) / distance from shooter to target

What's the distance between front and rear sight (let's call it "D")? (I'm not at home so I can't measure it)

With it we could calculate:

Difference in front sight blade height = ("D" inches X 12 inches) / 3600 inches

For example, if "D" was equal to 30 inches, then we'd need a front sight blade which would be 0.1" taller. (2.5mm).

If the front sight blade you have on it is already tall, indeed a complete new front sight assembly may be a good idea?

Early last year, I used an Enfield front sight on a P-14 that I had purchased, worked like a charm. Front sights can be bought at Gun Parts Inc, e-bay, etc
The #4 sites will work with the P-14. The #4 had 12 different sizes of front sight available to the rifle. Originally the P14 & US Army Rifle Model of 1917 were zeroed at the factory for 400 yards.

What ammo are you using?

Is it milsurp or modern commercial?

What distance is your target at and what setting do you have the sight set to?

Thanks guys - this info and what I gleaned elsewhere is quite helpful.

I am using handloads (of course!) 174gr BTHP at about 2300 fps. My front sight is a 0.015 and I am using the flip up sight set bottomed out at a 100 yd target. The peep sight ("Battle Sight") is zeroed for 250 yds so I won't be using it.

I understand that:

- the No4 and NoI MkIII sights work, but you need to add 60 thou, e.g. a LE -0.045 = a P14 + 0.015;

- on a P14, POI will change 1" for about every 0.009, so if I need to raise POI by 10 inches and have a +0.015, I'll need to go with a + 0.105 (Enfield + 0.045); and

- Springfield Sporters sells a "Front Sight Assortment" of five different sights for the LE for $7.

The No1 MkIII sights will fit as is. The base of the No4 sights will need to be filed down(too wide) to fit. I installed a .045 No 1 MkIII foresight on mine and that's about as high as you can go before the top of the blade binds on the top of the "side window" of the front sight carrier as you drive it in laterally.

Some yrs ago I bought a Danish surplus M1917 and found that they had devised another way of dealing with the front sight height issue. What they had done was to remove the vertical blade portion completely, and then drill a hole in the flat base portion. After that a roll pin was inset into the hole. The height of this new "blade" could then be adjusted by changing the height of the roll pin-as easy as a Dremel cut-off wheel job. The only downside that I could see is that a flat sided sight blade is preferable to a circular post for shooting.
