Highest quality military 98 Mauser actions?

I was wondering if the FN Israeli Contract 308 and .22 used the same receivers, as the single shot support for the 22 is held in by a screw. I have been told that the receivers were made the same and selected for 308 or 22 as needed.
I have a mint 3o8 barrel, bolt and wood etc.. to do this with the .22 receiver, which I have a few.
 
A scout Mauser in .308?
That's easy, you just need one of these shortened GEW98's:D

German, Czech and FN actions are the best.
 
Personally I consider the Swede 96's to be far superior in workmanship to the 98's I've got; one is Danzig WW1 and the second is a 1944 Sauer. Much ballyhoo about an average rifle IMO
 
Wartime rifles aren't fairly compared to Sweded mausers. If you want to see a truely beautiful Mauser, look at a non-refurb Steyr 1912 in 7mm, a 1908 Brazilian DWM Mauser or an unissued 1909 Argentine. Those are the cream of the crop, perhaps followed closely by the M1935 Brazilian Oberndorf.

A friend of mine has one of these, to me its in way too nice to have been issued, and has only been lightly fired. I posted pics of it a few months ago. One of if not the most beautiful military rifles I've ever seen. Far too nice to shoot!
 
I have a Colombian carbine in 30-06 mde by FN Herstal in the 1950s, one of the last 98 type actions to be made. Very smooth.
Otherwise the VZ 24 Czech action is very good.
But Tradeex is the place to go for used 98 action rifles, 96 too. I have a really nice 9.3 x57mm Husqvarna rifle, on a 96 action, I shortened the barrel to 20", so it's handy, I was guarding my wife picking cranberries last night, we live in black bear country, perfect for the purpose, no scope. Lots of horsepower. The 98 action id stronget and has more safeties
 
I see the original post is nearly 10 months old, so I wonder if the OP has picked out his Mauser by now?

For my two cents worth, I think the best of the best will always be the 98's built by the original Mauser Werke, whether commercial or military. I would love to find a 1935 Brazilian that's already been bubba'd, but not too badly, so I can make up a 7x57 sporter with a clear conscience. :p

A lot of late wartime actions can be pretty rough, but anything 1942 or earlier is usually pretty decent.
