Does anyone know what the highest velocity ammo is?

I went out to shoot this evening and sight in my new scope "The eRATicator!" what a sweet scope.

I decided to dial it in at 100 yards, I got a 1.5 inch group on 5 shots and I am a poor shot on my makeshift tripod. I then ran out of ammo (I was using PMC zappers) I then switched to federal gold and the POI dropped 7-8 inches.

I then moved the target to 50 yards... the shots were 5" high. Through trial and error I will find the optimum range to sight my little ruger in. so far I have'nt found it.

I did notice that the high velocity sure made a difference in reaching out to 100 yards so this tells me I should use/try the fastest ammo available for the straightest shot.

I understand some accuracy is traded off for speed in the world of 22 but the range it would give me in terms of deviation for scope settings will be worth the minor loss in accuracy.

So - that said, which is the fastest straightest shooting ammo out there?

PS. I'll post some pics of my new scope soon on its new home :)

Just checked CCIs website - looks like Quik Shok or Stingers might be the way to go they only rise an inch in the trajectory through to 100 z.

I check the specs on PMC zappers - they are 6.8 inches

I am going to buy a brick of stingers or Quik Shoks tomorrow I think.

The charts here indicate the Quick Shok to be much better than the Velocitor. (it uses a 32 gr bullet)

At 100 yards the velocity is 500 ft/s more and the energy it delivers is almost 80 more ft/lbs.

Also the mid range trajectory is just under and inch when zero'd at 100 yards as opposed to the velocitor.

I read online that some people use the stingers in their target grade barrels no problem.... I think I'll stick the CCI website - "Stingers are not to be used in match barrels"

Have you tried the Quik Shoks? - Ultimately I am looking for the flattest shooting LR

fastest 22 ammo

I haven't tried this myself so I don't know how accurate it is but for sheer velocity the 30 gr. Super Maximum Hollow Point made by Aguila is advertised at 1750 fps.

Yes, but the hyper velocity .22's don't shoot for sh1t compared to Velocitors, depends what you're doing I suppose. Stingers shot 2"-3" at 100 out of my SVT, Velocitors 0.75", and the Velocitors shoot flatter for anything past 100 yards. The Velocitor also has more energy at 100 yards than the Stinger of Quik Shok, as it looses energy slower. If I remember correctly, the Stinger has the same energy as a standard 40gr high velocity at 100 yards, despite leaving the barrel with twice the energy of the 40gr, slows down fast, and not terribly accurate.

Velocitors allow straight shooting to 100 on varmints no problem, try a 75 yard zero.

Thx, I am going to buy a brick of velocitors and maybe try those Aguilas - if I can find them.

Whose got the best price Wally mart or crappy tire? - I may actually have to visit a hunting store for the Aguila.

I use quik-shoks, and shoot .75"-1" at 100 yds. They're one of the most accurate round I've found in my Savage IIBV, and really open up gophers. They do a lot more damage than stingers, (or any other 22lr I've tried, for that matter) due to the fragementary design

OK I will do extensive testing - (also buy a brick of Quik Shoks) - looks like today I am buying $100 worth of ammo :D - my kimber needs somethng to eat too !

I'll set up three rows of targets , default scope set up for the most accurate flat shooting at 75 yards then pace all 3 ammos at 25 50 75 and 100,

I need a staple gun - one tool that is critical for any shooter!

I am excited to do some testing!!

What are you planning on shooting? Keep in mind that there's accurate and then there's accurate enough. Are you willing to stick to match ammo at a buck a pop, that does not open up in gophers?

Anything under 2-3" at 100yards is probably good enough for varmint hunting.

NO match ammo nooooo.

I am not looking for consistent shooting like that, or rounds that I need to study a motar handbook to shoot.

I am looking for the flattest accurate shooting round for my particualr rifle. Accuracy is not necessarily associated with hyper velocity - flat trajectories are though.

My goal is to reduce to a minimum hold over and hold under requirements for all the practical shooting I will be doing on the gopher fields this summer.

The balance will be met once I do some good testing.

fast ammo and a question

I am running a martini match the fastest I have had was with federal hyper velocity followed by the stingers. My question is why cant I fire a stinger out of a 10/22?????????

The case length on a stinger is longer than standard thus not seating it fully and can cause the base to blow off. Personally I have fired stingers out of my 10/22 and ruger mark II with no problems... yet. After learning that Im not supposed to do it, I dont.

I have noticed bulged bases using velocirators on my 10/22 (green mountain match barrel) and Marvel Conversion for my 1911. Havent tried it on my standard 10/22.

I'm very surprised to say the least you're shooting sub 1" groups with Quik Shok prosper, that's unheard of, literally. I'd like to see it done. Also, I found Quik Shok ineffective, most of the gophers got back down the hole. Stingers and Velocitors fared much better, with Velocitors doing the most damage out of the three. With these rounds, I've shot a LOT of gophers (we have a farm outside of Okotoks), and my experience has been the opposite of yours. I found Quik Shok both inaccurate and relatively ineffective compared to the other choices.

Are Stingers safe to shoot in a Remington Nylon 66? I have shot a few with no problems, but want to be sure. They sure make a nice cracking sound for a .22 ;)

Yes, the only place you can run into troubles is tight match chambers, even then, I have yet to hear of a single documented case of a blow. Guys worry it will hurt their match chambers, but that's about it, you're fine.

My 541S & 541T with match chambers will not chamber a Stinger. I suppose you could force it in, but that would mean engraving the case, not just the bullet, and I will not even try that. Velocitors shoot well for a HV round, as does the Superfast ammo manufactured for Winchester in Australia. All My standard 22's shoot Dynapoints, but I do not shoot plated ammo in my match rifles. One lot of old, Unplated PMC Zapper HV ammo shoots awesome in my 541's, but I only have about 3 bricks left, so I am hoarding it for long range work. I have shot under 2" at 200 yards with this ammo. It does not graph as high as some of the new HV rounds, but is so accurate and consistent that gophers and such are in deep trouble way out there. I do not care for Quik Shok at all, but someone else's mileage may vary. One thing about 22's, they will shoot what they like, and that varys a lot from rifle to rifle. Regards, Eagleye.

I bought a box of those. Ellwood Epps stocks them. As loud as my 22 mag, and the second shot blew the entire extractor assembly out of my buckmark.

DEFINITELY the most powerfull .22 cartridge.

Ryan

BTW...anyone have a buckmark extractor to part with?
