highest velocity ammo

My Rem 597 shoots Stingers better than anything else. The difference in power between a Stinger and a "standard" 22LR is easily noticed in a handgun. They're all I use.

I noticed my pistol liked stingers and mini mags - gave a new dimension to 22LR pistols :D

but back on topic.

So $165 later I have the following to test with:

500 Yellow Jackets
500 Velocitors
500 Quik Shoks
200 Mini mags
150 Federal Classic

Stingers were out because I have the 10/22T - also the only non Hyper velocity rated ammo is the mini mag which tends to fall between HV and hyper V.

Any one care to make a guess which will be the flattest shooting most accurate? (assume I know how to shoot :p)

Hopefully I'll know by sunday evening. Anything that doesn't make the cut will be fed to my Kimber :D

OK I learned something today. hyper velocity means a flatter shot yes but precision can be hindered. Accuracy on the bullseye can't be measuresd here in my tests as a rough zero was made with Yellow jackets at 75 to put things on paper - I was testing different weeight and speed of bulletes with out setting the scope so its natural for them to appear off center and grouped elswhere on the paper.

Each brand of ammo was shot at the Bullseye and the only result of interest to us is bullet drop and precision (not accuracy).

I must say the velocitor held some good precision compared to the hyper velocities. Quick shoks were disappointing - its easy to see their apparent high velocity. I think the federal Classic Hyper shows some possibilites and is WAY quieter than the other hyper rounds.
Yellow jackets seemed to be all over at 75 AND 50

There was about a 15 -20 MPH wind - I tried to have the wind at my back - but you know wind in alberta....

here are the results - I was shooting fast cause the sun was going down and rain clouds were moving in. A calm day in the sun - I'll do these tests again...

(note the ones marked 100 are actually 75 - I was shooting quick to get out of there!

CCI-V = Velocitors
CCI-Q = Quik Shoks
Fed Classic = federal Hyper velocity
Yellow = Jackets - figure it out

the velocitors aren;t "hyper velocity" but were in the mix due to reputation. I am going to test some federal gold and mini mags and winchester next time out and these 4 again in calm conditions.

Good postiong on your targets.

My Marlin 60 loves Yellow jackets. I've had a couple of 5 shot groups at 50 yds that was mostly one hole (about an inch hole).

Stingers are all over, but you can certainly feel the extra 'snap' when fired, and they tend to shoot high with lousy groups.

The rest is pretty typical.

Some very interesting stuff. Now I really don't mean to hijack the thread, but can we switch gears a bit and talk about 22 mag ammo?

I recently bought a used (but barely used) Marlin 25 MN with a 4X Banner scope mounted. It has maybe 1 box run through it. I haven't fired it yet and I have not bought any ammo for it yet. Mostly, it will be used for plinking although I only go out to the range 2 - 3 times a year. Secondly, I'll use it for groundhog control in my back yard where the longest shot will be between 50 - 60 yards.

Any recommendations?

Thanx in advance.

Speed and accuracy are not equivalent. Long range shooting and faster ammo in rimfire is not the best option.

The reason is for most .22 the faster rounds are acheived by using lighter bullets, but lighter bullets lose speed faster than heavier ones. So downrange performance drops off faster with the light fast bullets.

I would try a bunch of regular weight ammo (36-40gr) and see what shoots best in your rifle. Don't worry about the differences in drop, thats why scopes and sights have adjustments.

Personally I'd try the velocitors. Also note that at 100 yards the wind will affect the shooting much more than you might realize.

Same advice for 22 mag... try a bunch and see what shoots best in the rifle. My vote here again goes for heavy (50 gr) rather than fast, but since you're shooting short range it really doesn't matter beyond group size.

Stingers are fast yes but accuacy is for the ####s in all the 22s I have tried them in.Even the 22 maxi mags have ####ty accuracy also.
Best bet would be is buy a bunch of the hi velocity ammo of different brands as its not expensive and see what will suit your needs best.
In my 22 mags Federal 50gr are the most accurate I have used thus far.The Maxi mags are no more accurate than cheapo Win dyna-points IMO.
