Highlighting an engraving?

Hello,

I have a question for the group. My newest aquisition is a 50+ yo shotgun that has nice engravings on each side of the reciever. They are very lightly engraved in the metal and don't show up very well. Is there a way to highlight these engravings? At first I thought about rubbing white paint on it to fill in the engraving grooves, then I thought gold against the black would look better. I have never done anything like this before so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Gold Inlay

I have used a Gold Inlay kit to highlight small engraving etc. on firearms that I have re-blued. Brownell's sell a nice little kit by Bonanza, for doing just that.
But you must realize all the little pits, nicks, and scratches around and beside your stamped (not engraved) frame decoration will also get highlighted.
Looks like an Ithica medel. A nice working shotgun. Use yours and enjoy it.

Probably not going to turn out very well. Just for an experiment you could try dabbing on some gold paint and then gently wiping it off the surface with a non-lint cloth and thinner. That would give you an idea of what it will look like.

Thanks for the advise. Maybe I will try it. Yes it is an Ithaca model 37 12ga Featherlight that I acquired from one of the site members. I really like the feel of this shotgun. Can't wait to put some rounds through it. Want to use it for turkey this Spring :)

Do you think gold paint might last longer? It would have somewhat of an adhesive quality. I guess it would highlight all the nicks & scratches as another poster already pointed out :-(
