hey all
i'm looking at buying a compact, lightweight rifle to be able to take on some hiking/camping trips. Something i can strap to my backpack, that won't add too much weight. I often will backpack out to a campsite for several hours in the winter, so weight and size is a pretty big concern. Also has to have enough firepower for a coyote and preferably a deer. Caliber must be 270 and under.

thanks guys and gals!

Mares legs are awesome bush guns, super compact and easy to carry. In .44 mag or .357 there good for protection against coyotes and that but I dunno about deer. I use a Winchester model 94 as my main hiking/bush rifle. It's a 30-30 but they are very light and easy to pack around I always recommend the 94 for an all arounder.

Kimber Adirondack.

4 pounds 13 ounces, 18" barrel.

Check calibers to see if something works for you but you won't find anything lighter in a full sized compact rifle.

How about this?

Weight: 6.7 pounds unloaded.

How much hiking you do with that?? And its over 270. Op says under 6.8 cal. I recently handled a m77 hawkeye compact, in 308 but they can be had in smaller calibers.

I agree my choice also with a Single 410 gauge 13" barrel and 29" overall unrestricted carry in holster on hip... just in case

Thanks! I noticed the caliber restriction after posting.

A contender is one of the best I've found. in 7-30 waters or 6.8 spc
Non restricted, compact and under 4lbs in the right configuration.

I also just picked up an Kimber Adirondack for the same purpose

Tried a takedown blr a couple years ago and found it was too awkward and heavy for my liking
Although they are very nice guns.

Chiapa also makes the little badger in 22wmr I believe.

Baikal single shot in 270 as there was one for sale on ee. It has open sights with option to scope. Not sure if op what's a scope or not as this will add weight. If scope ruger m77 compact

I'm very fond of my Husqvarna 4100 Lightweight 270. I can carry it around all day and it would be even lighter with no scope.

They are virtually vintage-class rifles now though, being manufactured in the 1950s.

Re barrel a synthetic savage with a 16" barrel in 250 savage or 260 rem or look at various single shots depending on budget and how hard you will be on it when you hike

Question: why less than .270? I would have suggested .357 mare's leg without question. If it's recoil in 1 hand than .357 should be manageable...
