Hip shooting

I was skeet shooting for fun once and on a four shot station I made the mistake of loading 4 rounds into the tube. End of the world.
Same place was mad because I had a sling on my gun.

If I am paying to shoot for fun, at some pompous club how is a sling making people less safe.

Honnestly the only time I enjoy shooting now is on my own land, which is why these Att laws piss me off. I have to give my money to a dark hole in the wall club just to shoot restricteds, when I have land and beautiful days that I can't use to enjoy shooting in much safer conditions than clubs for free.

Our club rule is that clays must be shot from the shoulder. You can start with a lowered gun but when you pull the trigger the gun must be on your shoulder. Not only does this requirement preclude hip shooting but also prevents anyone who shows up wanting to shoot clays with their PGO shotgun.

If anyone objects the club is more than happy to show you the exit.

Question...

I have a Versamax, who's primamry use is IPSC 3 gun. It has had a few mods (milled loading port, tube extention, bolt handle etc) No sling ;)

I'm interested in doing some clays...and I like the idea of using the same shotgun (familiarity) I have a snap on gadget that prvents the hulls from ejecting.

Will I get any dirty looks using it for trap (Singles obvioulsy)?

It should be good to go for sporting...

Would appretiate your thoughts.

I would like to eventually get an O/U...if the clay bug really takes hold. The more trigger time the better!

No quicker way to get your club shut down if a local newspaper person is about, or some person with a cell phone, (see Rob Ford!!). Post that and see if the local firearms officer is monitoring the web, (which they do). The rest of us will suffer, thanks a lot!

Guys - I think we're misinterpreting what's happening here. No one that you or I know could even hit 21/25 literally 'from the hip'. My guess is something is lost in translation.

Depends on the club. Where I shoot it wouldn't be a problem. At least one club in Ontario, Toronto International, has barrel length limits (nothing under 26") but everywhere else it won't be an issue.

Just follow the rules. Open and empty unless it's your turn, no more than two shells in the gun (one only for singles) and use the shot size and shell strength approved by the club. Keep those in mind and you are good to go.

What Claybuster said.
But; we should be able to shoot from the hip at any range.(Follow the rules & regs of the comp)
If it's an open range... have fun.
Still be aware of other members.

It`s a 28 inch barrel...but understood...and thanks for the info and tips

Exactly, anyone that can accomplish 21/25 actually shooting trap or skeet from the hip is very talented. I shoot station 7 low from the hip now and then, just for friendly competition and average 75% or so, but I can't imagine hitting 84% of all of the targets, at all stations, during a round of skeet from the hip.

Then again, I never actually aim a shotgun like I aim a rifle, while shooting clays or while wingshooting.

Okay even THAT is more ninja than I thought anyone would be. :)

My guess is some old timer thought the OP wasn't shouldering his gun 'properly' or in the exact right position, and said "Gee son, you're almost shootin from the hip!". OP is ESL and takes literal meaning of statement. Comes to 'clarify' on CGN.

OR - OP is a ninja and should be touring with Tom Knapp.

Not ninja at all, just a friendly challenge between a few RSOs after everyone else had left. We often shoot doubles at every station with sub gauges, or shoot stations 4,5,6 only, throwing only doubles, and reversing the order at station 4. With some of us, it's not about scores, but rather about making it more of a challenge.

I hope by "from the hip" they meant a low gun starting position, as opposed to a premounted gun. I shoot low gun better than pre-mounted because I have a hard time getting my eyes off the end of the barrel and seeing the target. 99. 99% of shooters could not hit a cow in the *as with a scoop shovel "from the hip".

Most people probably mean that, but I actually mean shooting from the hip, as in not shouldering the gun at all. It's a good challenge to shoot station seven doubles, by shooting the low house target from the hip, and then shouldering the gun to shoot the high house target. It was our first shooting day of the year on Sunday, and I lost two targets, trying the doubles this way five times.

Exhibition style shooting is usually thought of as pointless by most clay shooters, why do you think Tom Knapp never won a major skeet, trap, or sporting clay shoot? Its flashy but useless.

It seems to me that Tom Knapp made some decent income due to his exhibition shooting. He is likely more well known, than most trap, skeet or sporting clays champions. As to never winning a major clays event, perhaps he found the normal clay sports boring, so he chose exhibition shooting instead.

Tom Knapp made a career out of exhibition shooting, which has nothing to do with trap or skeet or sporting clays competition.
I have watched a videos of him shooting doves holding the gun above his shoulder, just messing about .
I could care less of he never won a major competition, because he was not noted as a competition shooter.
My father did some exhibition shooting when I was young, he used to call those types of shots parlour tricks, and he was pretty good at it .
He also competed however, and was pretty good at that as well.
