Actually, there was a test one one of the long range sites. A group of people were on a US military range, and using radar they got over 5000 yards with a 50-70.

Was this military range in the gravity free environment of outerspace? Bringing physics into the equation, I guess it's possible as I know that the maximum range a .50 BMG will travel is 7000-8000 yards depending on the load but it's not doing any damage at that range and the holdover is a bit more than regular target sights or scopes are capable of.........

my mauser 71/84 has sights graduated to 1600m (1750 yards), so evidently they saw value in harassing fire at that range. to me it is not unimaginable that someone could hit a group of 15 men and horses at that range.
