hiya all.. 1911 .45ACP vs Glock 19 Gen 4

Hey guys, first time poster here! So, long time gun lover, but new licensee. Dad has always had a small collection, and of course I don't want it taken away if anything bad should happen to my dad, God forbid..

Long story short, I went shooting for the first time since I was a teenager and shot some autos in Vegas, so that doesn't even count..

Of course dad doesn't own a Glock, or any 9mm, and we lost the opportunity to buy the Glock 19 Gen 5 at the show this summer and now we can't find it anywhere! ARGH.

Long story short, while shooting, I shot 40 rounds of Glock 17 gen 4 and I did pretty good. I hit the target at 5m no problem with 20 shots, very precise, and at 10m I didn't miss but didn't exactly his the red either, at least not consistently. I also thought the kick was quite a bit, wasn't expecting it.

Then I grabbed a 1911 .45ACP. I don't actually know the make, I think it was a Sig but not sure, but anyway. This gun felt amazing in my hand, and I liked that it was heavier. Maybe it's because I'm a big guy but I actually thought it had LESS kick! Can you believe that? But the best part, I hit 9/10 in the red first mag and 9/10 the second, a beautiful grouping, way more accurate than the Glock, but more importantly, it was way more precise, as if the movement of the gun between shots didn't make a difference, the next shot went into the group (the Glock was accurate but not precise).

What you guys think?

Now, I have two semis at how, a Kimber .45 1911 and a Taurus .40, and I have two revolvers which have never been shot (one of which is a huge .44magnum), but like I said I always wanted a 9mm glock now I'm not even sure anymore, should I even bother since it seems I prefer the 1911?

Or could it be something else?

I have a G17 and a couple other 9mms and I used to have a Kimber 1911.

For some reason I always shot the 1911 well and with my other 9mm's I can shoot very well with them at 25 yards but I can't seem to be accurate with my G17.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Glock basher, it fits great in my hand and runs flawlessly but I just can't be consistent with it. It's not that the sights are off, my shots go all over the place (and the sights are tight)
 
A 9mm is always good to have in your collection for several reasons:

- Ammo is (comparatively) cheap and generally easy to source;
- Your default choices, such as Glock, S&W M&P 2.0, FN 509, etc. offer good value for the money, and info is readily available;
- If you want to get into IDPA, something like the Glock 19 Gen4, or maybe a Glock 19X if you have big hands, are a great default choice. Any of the others I've listed (among others) are also good.

As for the 1911A1? Great guns. I own four 1911-type pistols myself: one each USGI WWI and WWII Colts, a Mk. IV series 70, and a custom gunsmith build on forged Norinco frame and slide.

TL;DR: can't really go wrong, so the best answer to your 'Glock or 1911?' question is likely "Yes!"
 
yes i can believe it...9mm is a smaller, lighter bullet so it is snappier than the "push" type of recoil felt by the bigger, heavier .45acp..not mention the all steel gun is heavier, which also contributes to recoil management. Another contributing factor (to accuracy) is the single action trigger on the 1911 will be lighter than the Glock.

I much prefer 1911s but do see a place for a 9mm in my collection...in fact, i am waiting for the transfer to go through on one right now.

Both a Glock & 1911 fan here.

On the Glock..... G17 or G19 is the way to go. I have Glock's in .40 S&W but have a 9mm conversion barrel for one of my G22's.

My personal preference for a double stack mag pistol in 9mm, though is the Browning Hi-Power MkIII. This was after years of trying S&W's, Beretta, CZ 75/85 etc.

Should you bother to get a Glock? Personal preference, it's up to you..... :)

^ I'd agree with RL1. A polymer 9mm is going to feel much 'snappier" than a steel 1911 in .45acp. Shooting a heavier projectile also gives more of a push feeling. That's even true with 115gr 9mm vs 147gr.
While I have lots of 9mm's I currently don't have a polymer 9mm in the collection....just not my thing.
 
I forgot to mention that though I've been a 1911 fan for as long as I can remember - and that goes back to the days when no milsurp was off limits so long as it was rendered incapable of full auto fire - I chose a G19 gen4 'Canadian' model for IDPA and as my 'go to' range pistol because it isn't expensive to feed, is unquestionably reliable, and no matter what I'd like to add to it, or what I may ever need to fix on it, it's so commonplace that anything I might need to know is a 'Google' search away.

This past Saturday at a party someone mentioned being a new RPAL holder, getting set up with a club membership, and eyeing various 9mm pistols for their first handgun. I mentioned the above, and the previously discussed choices, threw in Canik since a couple range acquaintances run one without complaint and they offer plenty of features for the money, and ended by saying "Any of 'em are a good choice, so it's hard to go wrong. Just line 'em up at your local shop, see how they feel, and pick the one whose ergonomics you like best."

I should have mentioned of course I will buy a 9mm, and it will definitely be a Glock, I am just waiting now because like I said I missed out on the G19 gen 5 that was on sale for $700CAD in the summer but now I can't find it anywhere. I would actually prefer the new G45 due to the grip but I think it's pretty much the same.

I will definitely consider the G17 too since it is a bit bigger but then again I really want a gun that is the smallest allowed under the law (the law.. lets not get into that)..

Another 9mm I will definitely get for my collection is the Arex Zero One, a Sig clone of amazing quality.

I'll have to go and shoot other calibers to see what interests me, I always wanted a .357mag but I guess that's just a smaller version of the .44mag..

well you can even get a Glock 26 with an extended barrel...i love them but would not buy one as a "main" gun

Does anyone know if the Glock 45 will be available in Canada?

Also, what is the difference between the Glock 19 and 19X exactly?

And finally, should I even bother trying to find a G19 gen 5 when the Glock 17 is the same price and available in gen 5? The .4" longer barrel is the only difference I would think right?

HUGE difference between the G19 and G19x...i shot both side by side recently (see my review of Select Shooting's range day on their forum)...the G19x has a G17 frame with G19 slide so the grip is much bigger than the regular G19...you mentioned that you have big hands and 1911s work well for you so i would strongly recommend the G19x over the G19

just saw your second question...there are lots of differences between gen 5 and gen 4, like loss of finger grooves, for example. there are plenty of youtube vids that go over both in detail.

btw, i literally just got word that my transfer went through and my 9mm is on its way!

Yeah, I think I'll go for the G19X, don't really need a really small gun, just a 4.1" barrel. Then again the G19X seems much higher, like a full inch higher, so not really sure if that's the way to go since we can only have 10 round mags.

My question was about whether the G45 will be coming and what is the difference between that and the G19 or G19X? I know the half moon cutout is missing on the G45 but there must be more.

So, what 9mm are you getting? I'm in the process of ordering the Arex Zero One.

Where did you see the G19 Gen 5 for $700.00? I only see Gen 4’s for sale.

Glock 45 is not in Canada if they're even available in US. Glock 19x will be my next Glock when I come across a good deal... Full size grip is nice to have when you're not worried about concealment, esp if you don't have small hands and don't like your pinky hanging out under the grip (like with Glock 19)
 
About 1911s.. Sig 1911 I had was super accurate and ###y gun but ended up selling it along with other 1911s I've had over the years. I personally find the recoil of a polymer 9 to be much softer than a steel .45

One of the really great advantages of the 1911 semi auto is the excellent trigger that these pistols usually have. The single action clean break at about 3 to 4 lbs contributes to very good shooting. The trigger on the Glock is a gate latch compared to the 1911.

The trigger on the Glock is around 4.5 lbs - light enough but not near as crisp as a 1911. Many police agencies then also take their issue Glocks and purposely install an even heavier pull (New York trigger approx 8 to 12 lbs) for liability reasons.
 
Where did you see the G19 Gen 5 for $700.00? I only see Gen 4’s for sale.

I went to an gun show in Burlington this summer 2018, and after the show there was a sales event. They had the latest gen 5 Glock 19 for $700CAD even but the lineup was so huge I gave it up, that being a mistake now as I can't find it anywhere else.

That being said, the Glock 19X is now available online for $810 and it seems that's more up my alley anyway, so that's what i'll be getting.
