Anybody heard about the Titan Defense TD-415? Looks pretty much like an HK416. Its a complete piston upper and can be fitted to any AR15 lower. Anybody have info on where to buy and price?

Titan Defense TD-415 (HK416 clone) Gas piston upper preview (Pics inside)

Titan Defense is putting the finishing touches on their sorta HK416-ish clone, the TD-415 gas piston upper. I got to shoot a prototype that was 6000 rounds deep without a cleaning

First, they wanted to make it clear they are a independently owned and financed company. They are not a subsidiary of any other company, Todd Baily or anyone else. This is NOT a Todd Baily product.

They only manufacture upper receivers and are licensing the technology to organizations that want to manufacture complete firearms. They are negotiating with several companies, each of which will have their own logo etched on the upper

Now on to the upper. Since I own an LWRC M6A1, I will use it as a point of reference.

I got to fire the 14.5" SS, HBAR model, The barrel had an M4 notch and PWS muzzle device. It was slightly nose heavy, but felt rock solid. No rattles or loose feeling tolerances. The barrel will accept any AR15 muzzle device

The piston was a beefy unit, interfacing a long, thick single piece oprod design. Unlike the LWRC, the handguard was easy to remove, and the piston assembly was much simpler to take down. There are also fewer parts in the TD-415 design. The TD415 is self regulating, venting excess gas when the weapon cycles. The piston head lacks gas rings, making it simpler and easier to manufacture compared to the HK416

In terms of HK 416 compatibility, it will accept a 416 piston rod, and BCG. It's a single piece carrier, and nickle plated as is the bolt. The firing pin has a return spring, like the 416. The carrier does not feature notch/tab on the rear of the carrier key. The ejector is AR15 compatible.

The bolt with be shot peened, MPI, magnafluxed, yadda yadda, which should make the chart junkies happy

Nearly everything steel in the upper was nitride treated, making the components have incredible durability and virtually impervious to corrosion.

I fired the upper on full auto and semi. The recoil has a hard push back, as opposed to an LWRC jolt, but it wasn't harsh, even on full-auto. The action was clean enough to eat off of, and there was no significant heat transfer to speak of. There were zero failures with PMAG's and USGI mags

Overall, I was impressed. It was a good looking gun due to the distinct HK416 profile. I might sell my M6A1 to fund a TD415 purchase once the 10.5" units are ready

On to the crappy cell phone pics

Thanks for the review VictorF. I did try to google, and did not find any info as to which vendor would carry this product and how much in Canadian $'s. I was just trying to see if any fellow cgn'ers had any personal experience with this product, just trying to tap into the vast knowledge of this forum! I know that their website retails for $1250 US. Also since it is only the upper, would I be able to order and have it shipped directly from their website?

Thats a really nice looking upper. Also really nice that you can plop it on a normal M4 lower.

It would require an Export permit (from the USA), so you couldn't just order it from their site, but as long as they offer either: 16" barrels, or 14.5" with welded muzzle brake, it should be exportable. Since its the upper, the mags dont matter and neither does the type of buttstock.

ETA

the price is pretty decent too. If you got Questar to import it, it would be about 2 grand or so, for a quad-rail + piston upper. Not too bad IMHO.

I think its great that you posted the inquiry, obviously not many people knew the product was out there. From that review it appears that they'll gob other peoples name on the side and let them resell it also. The great thing youll find about CGN'rs is that allot of them are Entrepreneurs too, so by posting these found treasures, our sponsors find out about them too and often start working in the background to bring the product out to you.

That upper sure is Purdy...Id buy one if it said Questar on the side ;) ...Hey Mark-- CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? Good!

416 Clone

Armseast is already looking at getting some of these. This has been on going for awhile. Send Walt an email and if the interest is great enough, I'm sure based on market demand he'll bring them in.

So does that mean there's no way I can get the 10.5 inch barrel version? Even from say Dave's Surplus or Questar?

If you got a 6" muzzle brake or "barrel extension" permanently attached, you could.

But by permanently attached, the ways the ATF deem "appropriate" are either 1100 Degree silver solder, or a blind-pin and weld over the flash suppressor/extension. In this case, you are drilling a hole into your barrel

Im not sure if the silver solder will damage the barrel or not, but when they set out for a "permanent" attachment, they mean permanent.

You could also try getting the upper imported on a Rock River Arms "Pistol" lower, since that is how Questar gets its short barrels imported If I remember correctly.
