I noted a picture in the local Victoria paper today that showed the ERT team using what looked like a G36C in training. I found it odd that they used this set up. Doesn't current doctrine kinda limit the use of 5.56 to a 16 inch barrel due to terminal performance? (I'm not really up to speed on this so if I'm wrong set me straight). The G36C has a barrel length of 9 inches. The rifle in the picture also doesn't appear to have any back up sights to compliment the Eotech either...

Here's a link to the picture - for some reason I couldn't copy it (take the space out of the http)...

I wonder how they choose their kit and what the decision process is. Your thoughts?

I think that for CQB you don't need to worry about terminal ballistic performance. I read Sweeney's books and depending on the velocity of the load and the barrel length the threshold distance that permits breakage can vary. But we're talking 75y-200y, so indoors you should be good to go.

if its an ERT then its being used as an entry weapon/cqb ??. 5.56 is fast replacing 9mm in this role, and G36C is supposed to be a pretty nice rifle for the role..

i know even my SL8 did ok when i would sweep my house for zombies :D ( dry fire exercise of course .. gotta be prepared )

so 5.56 performs better than 9mm at CQB distances? The 5.56 defeats body armor but does not penetrate walls etc. as bad as 9mm? I've been wondering about this for a while so someone please educate me.
