You assume there was a decision between it and a piston rifle, there wasn't one. There weren't even trials for the m16, why you think it ended up being such a blunder its first years in vietnam?
Yeah. It was probably like : "ok you have to make a rifle with a production cost of of $150 that can meet these minimum requirements. Go for it."
"Hmmm well, a piston is a good idea, but for that cost it's got to go..."
Anyhow on your other point, I don't think their has ever been trials were the M-16 family involved actually won. Or even pulled out of last place.
