HK P7M8 tell me im making a bad decision.

Ok so I have such a hard on for a P7M8 right now and my local shop just so happens to have one sitting there for $1750 unfired condition. Ive seen them on sites like blueline for as high as $2100 so im inclined to think this is a good price am I right?

Im really spending more than my price range allows. In this price range, I know of a Kimber Custom Covert II for $1600 used, another gun that is on my "gotta have it" list. But i keep convincing myself that the P7 is one of those guns that is a great investment. Not only are they becoming scarce because of the discontinued nature, but they are heavily sought after by the HK cult and will only appreciate over the years.

Im out of a job til my next one starts in July, so money is a little tight. But I just sold my motorcycle and I cant sell my baby without atleast getting another cheaper(obviously not so cheap) toy to compensate for my loss, and make my sniffles go away. :p

So I guess my question is this. Should I snatch this great deal up while I can and eat rice for the next 2 months? Or will I be better off trying to find the same deal in another couple months?

No, nothing to do with that. Infact, I have big hands and usually don't like small guns, id rather have the tanks.:p But the p7 has such history and really is a unique design. Its like owning a swiss pocket watch. The rarity and amazing function is what turns my crank

I have seen P7M8 pop up very frequently in the last 2-3 years. If this was 10 years ago, I would have said jump all over that. 1750 is not that great a deal and I wouldn't be surprised if you found one later for about that same price point - as I have seen new ones pop up on the EE for about 17-1800 and used ones for 14-1600. If this is really bugging you, I would recommend you put it on layaway if it is an option.
 
Buy it because you want it. Firearms are not a financial investment aside from their purchase price. There is no money in selling old or unique guns.

That's a pretty fair price for an unfired P7M8. If you have larger hands like you mentioned though you may like the P7M13 a little better. I know i do. They're a compact design that is accurate and hold its value well. What's not to like? Ok, the blueing is not as hardy as others I have and you already mentioned the price. Other than that, there really is a reason most people enjoy these and will not be without one in the collection.
 
I think the HK PM series are interesting guns, I would own one if i wasn't a lowly blue collar. But as it stands i think it'll be a while before I can actually afford one. I'll stick to my 686 i guess.

This seems like solid advice. thanks for the honest answer, I might take a step back from this one. I was under the impression these are getting increasingly difficult to find and prices seem to keep going up. My gun lust gets away with me sometimes.

Yah, I definitely want a P7, but was frantically trying to justify overextending my budget for the time being. :) Still, seems to me these guns hold there value quite well, and for me that is a selling feature.
 
you have no solid income right now, and what if (for whatever reason) the june / july work disappears or gets pushed out? BAD decision to spend money now - unless you're 19 and still living at home with Mom-n-Dad and not paying a penny for rent or food and your gf is cheap, easy, and pays for everything.

here's a thought - learn to earn more money than you need so that you have plenty of discretionary income. that way, you won't have to worry about silly decisions like this. if this was a $20 gun, you wouldn't be asking us. and if you had $650k in the bank, you wouldn't be asking us. so, since this ISN'T a $20 gun, make it so that you DO have $650k in the bank.
 
You don't buy a P7 because of the price range or even size. You buy a P7 because it's an insanely clever design and shoots like a laser.

Having gotten that off my chest, I agree with Glock4ever in that I don't think you're missing out on a phenomenal deal. Given your situation, I would wait & snipe one that comes along later.
 
My friend had one for a while. Every time I played with this pistol I really could not see anything special about it to justify the price. And that squeeze handle was the biggest turn off for me. AFAIC there are many accurate 9mm pistols available for a fraction of the price of P7M8.

I dont need a lesson on how to spend my money thanks. The fact of the matter is I wouldn't have batted an eye before purchasing this if I wasn't waiting for my next project to start, but since im trying not to spend too much money i was looking for justification before this purchase. I'm not young, and I don't live with my parents.

here's a thought - please enlighten us all on learning to earn more money than we need so we all have plenty of discretionary income. Seems like you have it all together.
 
Again, their value is only as high as the market will bear. With the P7 now out of production and parts quite scarce, I can see their value dropping rapidly. Magazines alone are fetching over $100 a piece if you can find them.

deets: 10 years ago I saw a used P7M8 come in for like 800 bucks to a gunstore in Edmonton at the time I probably could have bought it but I was a Colt 1911 kick so I bought a Colt 1911 Series 70 for that same 800 bucks (In my defense it was a beautiful nickel plated model with original box) Do I regret that decision? I dunno I don't really think about it any more then M1 Garands that were sitting on the rack for 200 bucks (5/800 bucks) which I also didn't buy because I don't like Milsurps. When it comes to guns, there are deals all the time. I don't think that the P7M8 you are looking at right is that great of a deal - if it was NIB one for say 1200 bucks I would jump all over it and that is worth suffering a bit for but I know I wouldn't suffer for this particular deal. The only decision I ever regret is letting my wife talk me out of buying a brand new house in Edmonton for 275K in 2002 because she wasn't ready to buy and seeing that same house sell in 2007 for 750K.

Dropping? I would have thought the exact opposite because of the example you have given. Maybe im looking at this wrong. Being so rare, wouldn't it drive the price up?

Also, good point about the mag price, I haven't even asked how many the gun comes with.

Im leaning more towards getting a P7 once my new job starts. It is definitely on my MUST BUY LIST but if I can find the same price a few months down the road I might just get something a little cheaper for the time being to satisfy my hunger. Gonna go to the gun store this afternoon and see what I get talked into. :D
