I have an HK Mark 23 (as well as some other pistols). I am experiencing something that I have never seen before. I religiously clean, and maintain my firearms, in fact they are cleaned every time after use. I also shoot brand name ammo. Alright, on to my question - After a day at the range, I look down my barrel, and to my shock, there is what appears to be sand particles in the barrel. It certainly is some kind of residue, any thoughts?

Thanks!

Those are chips of metal from the barrel rifling being shaved off by the projectile. You might have to replace the barrel.

Sounds pretty normal. There is always some crap in the barrel after a range session. Think about the sequence of events when you fire. Primer ignites powder, explosion propels the bullet down the barrel, gasses and other residue come flying down the barrel right behind the bullet. Some of it is bound to stick. I would not worry about it.

I don't mean to make presumptions, but are you relatively new to shooting? I know when I first started out, I over analyzed a lot things when it came to shooting.

The folks advising about powder residue are right. Metal getting shaved from the barrel just doesn't happen that way (the gilding metal covering the bullet is much softer than the metal of the barrel). If you were to have stuff in the barrel after cleaning, then some other problem might be there (or you didn't clean well enough). But it really sounds like powder residue which is a normal occurrence after firing any gun. But it never hurts to ask about these things, and one of the really good things about this site is that there are always knowledgeable people around who will help you out.
