Is anyone aware of the legalities involved in changing the appearance of a firearm. I've read some interesting tidbits on how an HK SL-8 can be dyed and modified to "appear" like a HK G-36. One of several examples is in this link.

I am hesitant because when I was a younger man I had a TP-22 plinking rifle that looked like an AR-15. I was informed that its class had changed to prohibited due to its similiarity to a prohibited weapon. But this was prohibited as a weapon group by its make/manufacturer.

In this case one can take a legal firearm and modifiy it. I don't believe it is illegal to add a RAS system for instance. So is it illegal to modify a legal weapon if you do not modify it to make it illegal by law (ie. a bull pup stock) or contravene existing rules (ie. maintaining barrel length) but by it's appearance is modified to "appear" like a restricted/prohibited weapon.

Cheers.

Depending on the barrel length, I don't think the G36 is restricted. The SL8 is non-restricted,.......

I appreciate the responses. I believe the G-36K has a 12.5" barrel though which would make it restricted at best. The Canadian govt hasn't been "reasonable" in regard to HK submissions historically either. I've never seen one for sale or advertised, even as restricted. Perhaps I haven't looked hard enough...

In any event I know the SL-8 is legal and I have inherited one by default for a debt and am in a position to dissect it for my amusement so the the original question stands; just how much can a weapon be modified/changed, keeping within sizing regulations of barrel and total length, etc and still be considered a legal rifle( if hypothetically in this case the G-36 were restricted... or even prohibited)?
