I have shot one and think they are the most ungainly rifle I have ever held. The G-36k on the other hand is well balanced and shoots like a dream even on automatic.
How difficult would it be to manufacture a semi-automatic version of the G-36? Probably not that difficult but the will to do it in todays politically charged anti-firearm climate makes it almost impossible for HK. HK has always been aloof with civilian shooters.

It would mean complete re-tooling of the molds for a semi-only version, as well as building it to meet German Government export guidelines (even more restrictive than US export guidelines now) for maybe a hundred or two hundred gun sales. (As the US wouldn't be able to buy them either without domestic manufacturing, which could cost tens of millions to set up injection molding for full size rifles) The re-tooling would in turn cost millions, as well as the German Gov. owning partial rights to the G36 design.

In short, there will never be a full civilian G36, HK has moved away from the poly rifles anyways and their successors are the 416/417 or the civilian counterparts the MR223 and MR308, which are already set up for export and in full production.

Well put F22_RaptoR,

Except I don't agree that HK is "Moving Away" from Poly rifles. They are still full steam ahead with the G36. It is still one of their best selling products. You need to think outside of the Civilian market and see how many major armies are adopting the G36. It's increasing all the time and more than the HK 416 / Hk 417 family.

HK should just ask to make an exemption from the German governemnt to export a legal version for sale, it would be a great rifle for the Canadian market, and sell it at a price equal or less than a SL8 which should be doable.

There are already unrestricted G36`s in Canadian hands, if the CFO`s and lab had been able to stop that, I`m sure they would have. So no re-tooling necessary, no new molds, no redesign. So why not a civillian G36?

The very few in Canadian hands (including the UMP's and MP7's) were sold off by movie companies that violated their End User licenses. They will NEVER deal with HK ever again due to this. As well as our federal government changed the regulations of police departments selling off guns to civilians, now it's only sell to another department or have them destroyed. So that's it, unless another movie company gets a hold of some (unlikely with HK's experience) there will be no more of them. The few we have were an incredible stroke of luck.

There was never an issue on our governments end on the FRT's for them.

And yet again, it's due to the German governments regulations for exporting non-sporting firearms, even for sale to Germans any rifle must not be based on a military firearms, which is why the MR223 is not compatible with standard AR15 lowers, but the MR556a1 is, because it's US made, and not subject to German export regulations.

x2 on the thumbhole. You can thank the US BATFA for that sweet little innovation. Great rifle accuracy and operationally speaking, but a donkeys arse to hold... especially with big hands. I had to chop mine off to make a pistol grip and couldn't be happier ever since.

ATF had nothing to do with it, it's to do with German export laws. That's why the US version and the international version have different magazines, the single stack mag for the US version is due to the LCMM prohibition in the US import regs.
