Hi guys.

I bought a (very slightly) used SL8 off a member here a year or so ago, and all in all must say i love the rifle. Ive been reloading for a couple years as well, and reloaded for it from day 1. I was shooting a Weatherby Vanguard Varmint special before the SL8, and using 50, 52, 53, and 55 gn bullets in it. I playd around with a few loads for the SL8 before finding one that is just SUPER. As a matter of fact, it produces groups that out do some bolt rifles, and out of a semi auto, that is just spectacular.

Now what amazes me is that all the research I do, tells me that guys are using 60+ gn bullets, usually 69 gn bullets in their SL8's. I bought a box of 69 gn SMK a while back and play'd with different loads and never found one that was worth anything in my SL8... Initially I found that 24 gn H334 or Benchmark and a 55 gn NBT was the bullet to go with, making 3/4" groups at 100y.

Then..... I ran across the 55 gn Varmageddon's. The "cheap" Nosler bullets! BANG. Instantly my groups shrunk. Now, using 23.4 gn Benchmark and 55 gn Varmegeddon at 2.600 COAL is giving me 5 shot groups of UNDER 1/2" at 100y! I shot multiple groups under 1/2" last night with that load in my SL8, and am just blown away by that..... WHY is it that my SL8 is shooting 55 gn bullets so well? It has the stock barrel on it, and im under the impression they are all 1-7 twist, so that being said, a heavier gn bullet should be the way to go.. no?

Anyways, I thought i'd share my findings, and am hoping other SL8 owners will chime in here with their loads and findings?

Heres a sample of one of my targets from last night, there was a consistent wind of approx 12-15 kph from the side, so conditions were not ideal, but not too bad.

Good to know - nice groups.

I had some good groups with 69 gr HDY bthp match using Varget on he w/e from my SL8. Interstingly tho, I have had good results with my fave load for my Rem 700 5R in the SL*. That load is a 52 gr hdy bthp match with 25 gr of IMR 4320. Worked quite well.

With the help of hogie and cr5 here on CGN I have found 69gr SMK loads that hogie made me (unknown powder) shot about 1 to 1.5" . cr5 had good luck with his SL8 with 60gr Noslers. he brought me some of his and they shot 1 to 1.5" for me. So deciding between them I had to consider the use. Since I like to blow up crows I decided to go with Nosler 60gr Varminters. The load I worked up to was 23.5gr of Accurate Arms AA2230 2.600 OAL. CCI Primers. I am shooting consistent 1 MOA with this. I am no where good enough a shooter to do better. I can't shoot as good as I once could but I am sure it could do better for someone else.

Try the Federal X855 62 gr ( green tips) out of both our SL8-4 my wife and i get easy, between 1 and 2 MOA with that surplus ammo, probably the best i tried... JP.

I think I was using CFE223 under those 60gr Nosler varmint boolits and my SL8-4 was doing 1moa when I was having a good day and about 1.25-1.5 when I was not doing so well. I also had really good luck with 55gr Hornady V-max and 50gr Win Ballistic Silvertips for factory fodder.

Nice. I picked up around 600 of the Hdy 52 gn HPBT Match at a gunshow last year for cheap.... Ill play around with them a bit sometime as well. Also, I had a custom fake suppressor with internal flash hider made up for night shooting. It should take care of the blooming issue in my Zeiss/Fero Z51 NV scope. I was thinking of working up a load using a little less powder and the 69 gn SMK I have here.

All in all, im very happy with the fact that the Varmageddon's are working so dang good, as they are the cheapest bullet I can find! ;-) Maybe with a little more tuning I'll be able to get it to perform even better! Although 1/2 MOA is as good as any semi auto can do for the most part on the best day! I tried 55 gn VMAX and 55 gn NBT and 55 gn Ballistic Silvertips with the same load of 23.4 gn benchmark, (or 23 gn H335) , and none of them shot anywhere as well as the cheap Varmageddon's! Strange.
