HK SL8 or ACR?

So I've tried almost every black rifle out there with the exception of the HK SL8. Thinking that might be a nice new toy, but I still miss my ACR. Any thoughts from SL8 owners? (ie: how reliable are the AR mag adapters, how's the weight, etc.) Sell me on the SL8! :D

And where have all the G36's gone?

Good question, maybe with the new German free trade deal we can get some in:p:p

No experience with the SL8, only with the G36, they are similar, problem is once you get one you want to do the conversion, $$$$

If you could get an SL8 to this guy for the conversion you would be G2G. or buy one and send it to him and PH export it?

I'm building one right now.

1st step is the HERA Arms v2 conversion kit with ACR Enhanced folding stock.

Lower conversion kit for LAR15s

Slap on a short handguard with rail (B&T, EMA Tactical, Troy Battle Rail).

Flash hider installed

Quality flip up iron sights.

Acog.

I have no prior experience with them, but will surely be providing my reviews once it's completed.

Heavy? Yeah. So what. It's NOT a Carbine or a CQB. I know that before hand.

Expensive? A $3k, top of the line AR can also be expensive. And just as good.

Buy it all off the used market and you're saving quite a bit.

G36 conversion would be very cool, but not what i'm personally interested in doing.

The big difference is that the SL8 can be folded in half and put in your backpack on your way out in the bush. The AR, well we all know that's a no-go. But that's neither here or there and just a discussion that's been beaten to death.

Picked up my -4 on the EE a couple of years ago for $1900 with low round count. Winchester Varmit Silvertips had a 60% light primer strike misfire rate....but I have had zero issues with TAP and AE ammo with another 300 rounds since then.

I have the HERA Gen 2 with ACR stock....but was equally as happy with functionality of a CTR/Larue RISR combo on the adapter block for the Hera. The ACR stock looks miles better though for the armchair observer.

Accurate as hell. Depending on conditions and how much coffee I've had, 0.5MOA is achievable with 60gr TAP. It opens up to about 0.75-1.25MOA with 75gr TAP (though I still think it's the shooter). Damn heavy barrel, however.

Since I'm not an internet commando I have no use for the folding stock, therefore I turned my SL8-5 into a PSG-8. :D

I'm not really sold on my mag-well conversion. I bought my SL8 used from a local dealer so it came with a mag-well conversion amongst other goodies. The conversion would be an early model, 5 years old and I have no idea who its made by.
The issue I have is that it doesn't always strip the first round off of the LAR mag, the mags all work fine in my M-15.
I guess if I bought new conversion or some new mags I could figure out the problem.

I havent really done any real load development or accuracy testing with it, smashing pop cans out at 200m freehand with 55gr Bronze PMC was good enough for me.

I have an SL8 and I love it. I have not converted it & used it at the range. It likes the heavier bullets due to the twist.
I have not been exposed to an ACR. I have a Swiss Arms Classic Green. They are both excellent and I will keep both - never for sale!

My SL8-5 is stock other than I added an NEA magwell.

Front end heavy but accurate as hell. I plan to scope it and make it my precision gun for gun games.

I have had not the greatest results from the magwell. I had to do some work with a file to get it to go on the rifle (I filed the magwell, not the gun). It likes Pmags but doesn't seem to like the USGI mag that came with my LMT. I haven't tried the LAR mags on it yet (I have them, just haven't gotten around to it).

I tried using it for carbine matches but it was just too damned heavy and unbalanced. With modifications, it would probably be decent for that, but it would be hard to beat an AR when you look at bang for the buck.

And from my understanding, it wasn't meant to be a light(er) weight, fast swinging AR carbine wanna-be.

It would be interesting to know how you'd feel with your SL8 with the HERA-ACR conversion kit Vs stock stock; if it would balance it better.

The only way to make the SL8 balance better would be......stuff the shoulder stock with metal.
Well, I suppose a G36 short barrel would do the trick.

The balance issue or apparent balance issue is from it being made of polymer (really light) with a long bull barrel sticking out the front (really heavy).

So the consensus seems to be accurate but heavy?

Depends if your a Mary or not.

I don't find that the rifle has a balance issue, I'm over 200lbs and built like a brick s**thouse. ;)

I have an SL8 with the HERA BCK 2 and ACR folder. I'm not an experienced shooter, so I can't get 0.5MOA out of it, but I've been learning to shoot with this rifle from a harris bipod, and it is enjoyable. I can get 1-2" groups with 62gr green tip, but I tend to throw a round every group. I also have an NEA AR adapter which works fine. I use LAR15 mags, they rattle around a bit in the magwell but seem to stay in place. I filed the mags a little bit where the bolt had scratched them

I've never shot an AR so I can't comment on the handling, but I can say it seems hefty. It weighs just over 10lbs. I weighed my rifle before and after the Hera Arms with ACR folding stock conversion and there was negligible weight difference. The balance felt better, I guess because the pistol grip is easier to handle, but the original thumb hole stock had a heavy plastic insert at the back with lightweight plastic making up rest of it.

Blaxsun, if you're interested in this gun, let me know, I'd be willing to trade for something different if you want. ;)

Am I the only one that thinks the SL8/G36 is ugly as sin? lol Ive shot the SL8 and didn't like the grip or the weight, but it was fairly accurate. Id say the Swiss arms is a better rifle and just as accurate if not more.

Had 2 SL-8's, they shot well but were heavy and gosh awful ugly. (to me anyway)
Had an ACR with the Questar barrel on it, sold it, missed it badly, and now have a new restricted one. Once the non restricted 6.8 kits come in, it will be a non restricted deer gun! Factory Bushmaster barrel has been shooting VERY well for me for a lighter gun. But you know you have to try one to really have an opinion, right?:p:D

I've only tried the ACR. Thought the first batch was a tad heavy; not sure if the barrel weight is any less on the most recent ones. Keep your fingers crossed on the 6.8SPC kits... (and crossed, and crossed...)

With the exception of the Tavor, being a bullpup and by its nature a better balanced rifle, aren't we beating a deadhorse here, the one being that all NR black rifles we have are long, heavy and expensive rigs..(eh pigs)?

I'm looking forward to the day that I'll have both in my hands an SL8 (hera-acr, b&t handrail, new mag well, a handstop, ALL of top rail removed) and an NR ACR to judge the overall weight difference and how they both handle.

Get an SL8 from EE for $1700, throw $1,100 at it and you're right at the selling point of the new NR ACR pre-tax. One thing the SL8 doesn't have that I would have loved to see from factory is a flash hider.

Again, I say that you need to know exactly what you plan and what to use it for. Some of these NR blackrifles are just better in some areas that other, and some have drawbacks where others shine.
