Im looking to get my first rifle, and Im looking for something thats non-restricted. The one that I have my heart set at is the HK SL8.

How does it handle? Hows the accuracy? I also dont really understand what the different versions are (-4/-5). Can someone explain this to a noob?

I also read that some rifles were able to get around the 5 round limit by using pistol mags.... is there the same "issue" with the SL8?

The pistol mag thing refers to AR pistol mags specifically. IIRC the G36 accepts AR mags, so it wouldn't surprise me if the SL8 did as well.

You can get an Adaptor (Wolverinne supplies has it i think) that accepts AR15 magazines. The "Bolt hold open" feature MAY not work due to the weaker springs that the AR15 magazines sometimes have. But from what i read they are as reliable as the stock mags.

The designation 4/5 refer pretty much to the optic rail on top. IIRC the SL8-5 has the LONG full length rail, and the SL8-4 has the short G36c style optic rail.

I dont have an SL8, but have talked to many people that do. They are VERY accurate, easily capable of sub MOA accuracy with good ammo.

They are definatly front heavy (due to the heavy barrel) so they are more of a varmint or target rifle (as compared to a 3-gun rifle or something), but are a decent weight (not too heavy, but not "light")

From a little personal experience (a friend's gun), it certainly is a varmint/target rifle. I wouldn't want to lug it around on any competition where speed might be a factor though.

Definitely more accurate with it than my AR though. Then again, two different purposes :D

I just bought one. It shoots well and looks great. On the downside I don't find the grip that comfortable. Also accessories are few and very expensive.

I think you would be better off with a restricted AR unless you are shooting off range

I had one, exceptionally accurate. With a bipod (Harris Swivel) and a Leupold 3.5-10X scope on top, using factory 69 grain Match ammo, I was printing sub MOA groups at 300 meters.

Alas, I sold it to fund my trip to Vimy Ridge last year, and though I miss it, I realize that I fire my AR's much more often.

I've owned a couple of SL8's. My only complaint is that the trigger pull seems quite heavy. I also found that the safety lever got in the way of my grip. The Swiss Arms rifles are far better in my opinion, but they also cost about $750 more than an SL8.

I have one...it took awhile but i managed to find it. it is a great rifle. very accurate and feels great. probable alittle more then 1 needs for their first rifle but if you can afford it and actually use it more power to you.

You will have fun and be the envy of all at the range.

I love mine dearly! With cheap ammo and minimum effort I still get amazing groupings with this rifle.

It's not as easy to modify and pretty-up like the AR is, but it will turn heads at the range (even when I take it to the US).

The SL8 with hensoldt optic is the same cost as a SIG rifle with just irons. And if you ever want to take your rifle to a fancy range in the States a SIG won't get ATF approval. Which is unfortunate because they are also great rifles.

I went all out and got the folding stock for my SL8. The AR mag well from conversion from Wolverine wasn't working to my satisfaction and they refunded me, AWESOME people to deal with, I suggest looking there if you want a new SL8. They have the G36 style optics too. If you want used I believe there at least a couple SL8's in the E&E right now.

+1 on that. A buddy has one that is every bit the equal of my Swiss Arms in the accuracy department. It is also, hands down, the most uncomfortable-to-hold gun I have ever encountered, in my hands. Definitely something you want to hold and handle before buying.

After handling an SL8 my only gripe with it was that it seemed a bit forward heavy which was kind of annoying and would take some getting used to.

I wouldn't mind getting my paws on one of these as well. It is really too bad that they didn't stick with the stock / grip configuration that was had on the prototype. Sort of a quasi-mutant G36 / PSG1 look and feel.

Did you get your dual optics from Wolverine as well? I've been keeping an eye out for that particular sight unit but haven't seen one anywhere.

I have to admit that the SL8-4 has been one of my most accurate service rifles especially with the Hensoldt optic.

With the G36K stock its the perfect LOP for most people under 6'6 ...

have they fixed the cracking stock issue?

As far as I know they have not done anything about the cracking issue. Mine first cracked after about 8 or 9 hundred rounds, the second replacement lower receiver I got only went about 80 rounds before it too cracked.;) So far my third one has not cracked yet but for some reason the bolt does not always stay open after the last shot. My other complaint is the polymer top rail, after a while it seems to flex or shift too much and every time I take the gun out it is either shooting 2 inches to the left or right. I hear they have an SL8-6 out now and is said to use an aluminum top rail which should help this problem. If you plan on buying new I would go for the SL8-6. If you do a search on the HK Pro forum there is more info about this stuff. As far as accuracy goes, yes they are very accurate for a semi auto rifle and will shoot sub MOA. I will also give credit to Wolverine Supplies, they are great people and do stand behind their products and if they can help you out with anything they certainly will.:)
