I was under the impression that any restricted class barrel may be shortened by anyone since it doesn't change it's classification...I may be wrong...

I also know that any non-restricted, on a semi-automatic action, may be cut down to only 18.5".

it USED to be that way.

You could re-manufacture a barrel as long as it was by a "certified" barrel maker, whatever that means...

Now, the barrel can only be made to that exact length, you cant cut it down SHORTER than 18.5". So if you had a 26" barrel you wanted to be 22" or something, that's perfectly fine, but if you have a 16" restricted barrel you want to shorten to 10" or 8", then thats not cool...

It has to be a "brand new" barrel made to the length you want. All it does is cost guys like me and you more cash (100-ish to cut, crown and thread a USC barrel to 8" from 16?) versus the cost of a brand new barrel blank, then the machine work to profile it all the way, then the chamber reamers to cut and finish the chamber, THEN crown and thread (or machine flange into)... and it doesn't do one darned thing to stop criminals from chopping their barrels down.... }:-(

Another great "change of heart" from the RCMP within the past few years.

A lot of people told me that my .22 AA conversion for my Glock was too expensive and I should just buy a new .22 pistol. Same thing about my Roni carbine conversion. You know what, I have forgotten about he money now and am very happy I bought both. Same thing will happen to you. Remember me when you get it! :p

some HK pron to get this thread some attention:

Were'd you get that from? What reg says that?

I cant quote what rule, only what I've heard here and from guys that have been in the gun community longer than I have.

I DO know that I emailed the RCMP and asked if I could have a certified "barrel maker" cut down and re-classify my USC barrel to 8", and they told me that it HAD to be manufactured to the length I was registering it at, it could NOT be cut down, even by someone that manufacturers barrels.

AHA! still have the Email, lemme put it up:

Sir

Thank you for your inquiry. The barrel length will need to match the national database of standard barrels for your firearm. It is not possible to alter (cut) a manufactured barrel to a length less than 457mm, or you would be creating a prohibited firearm once assembled (whether you are an individual or a gunsmith or other business). Having said this, it is completely legal to purchase a barrel from a manufacturer and install it on your firearm. If the barrel length purchased is not in the national database, a bill of sale from a recognized manufacturer will usually suffice to make an entry in the db and allow a certificate to be created for your firearm.

Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This bottom one has a bit of a different folder on it. Looks like an ACE... interesting.

And fyi... cutting any barrel under 18.5" makes it a prohibited device which equates to losing all your firearms forever, and your rights to own more forever, and I think your junk might fall off to boot. It makes zero difference if the barrel is already in the restricted zone or not.

Ignorance of the law is not an acceptible defence for not following it. Wishing does not make it true. Common sense does not come in to play. Never believe what you heard some guy say on the net without making sure for yourself first... including from me;). That 'Net Guy" isn't going to pay the legal fees to keep your tookus out of the joint and he definately won't be able to get your guns back after the RC's grind them into dust.

Yep thats an HDPS stock block C i believe, with an ACE stock.

I was originally looking at one of those before I designed and got a machine shop to make my own one, which I like better :D

So if a recognized manufacturer cuts remanufactures your 16" barrel into an 8" barrel and gives you an invoice for that, I don't see what the issue is. There ARE licensed, recognized manufacturers who will do this. If you want to be technical about it you can sell them the 16" barrel and they can sell you back an 8" barrel.

Sure you can try that. Would anybody even KNOW? or care? probably not.

But just so you know, according to the Email I personally got, the RCMP considers that a prohibited device.

Again, I really dont care, its not a big deal to me. You can always try writing the RCMP and see if they give you a different answer or not.

Considering that it (as far as I know) USED to be legal to do, it would be damn near impossible for them to stick anything to you, you can just say you had it done 5 years ago as a project. Im just lettin you guys know what I heard back from the RCMP! :D

ETA - to clarify things.

JW if there are any dealers in Canada that sell the HK rails for the top, sides, and bottom?

I was thinking about purchasing a grey one that a fellow CGNer brought to my attention, but I just wouldn't be happy with it in the end (and I don't want to dye the plastic).

I'll save pennies until I can get a brand new one without having a second thought, but I think the short barrel conversion is a definite

Hey Danimal, If you can get the gray one for a good price, I would say go for it. Mine was died and it looks great. Im just waiting for it to get back from the smith, getting the ump slots cut. and added a Hera Arms folding stock. Should have it back in a week or two and will post a pick.
here is an older pic before the new upgrades. enjoy.
