I am looking to buy an Hk USP or a Sig p229r (in 9mm), but I can't decided yet. I know the Sig is more compact than the USP, and their accuracy seems to be pretty much similiar from what I have read, but I find these two guns very appealing. I like the fact that I could buy a 22lr conversion kit for the P229. I didn't have the chance to handle a USP but it seems to required big hands ( 5 feet 10 inches, with medium hands). Advices would be appreciated.

As for the 22. kit you can usually just buy an entire .22 pistol for the same price. I had a USP for a while, they are a big gun. Worked fine for my because I have long fingers.

Just try to get to a gun store and feel up a USP.

I have both. I really like the USP. it is way smoother and the natural point is much closer for me. I love the trigger and the de-cocker and the stacked mags. The p229 can bite you if your not careful, that slide in relation to the pistol grip is a big lower.

cheers

The USP grip is not all that large (although it is certainly NOT small), it's just blocky. I found the reach to the trigger too short for me.
+1. I find that the USP grip is actually smaller than Sig P226's (not sure about the P229), though not by much.

The USP grip is boxy, but I have no problems with it and I'm 5"11 with average hands.

On a related note, the USP9 is the only gun I haven't sold/replaced with something else.

Thank you for your inputs, I'll have to handle them first to really decide, but I was leaning towards the USP, so it might go in that direction. Can I still find some 999$ Hk Usp (NIB) somewhere?

Probably less.

I have two of the P229R's, and they are my favorite pistol. They are a fantastic product that I would recommend to any shooter at any stage of their shooting career. I used to have a USP in 9mm. I wanted to love it, but after a year I traded it for a P2000 9mm... which I like much better.... Why? The grip. The USP grip blows. I'm 6'3", 250lbs. I think I have relatively "normal" size hands. I found the USP grip hard to really gain optimal control of the gun for fast shooting. The gun is pretty accurate, but I always felt like I was "re-negotiating" my grip with it constantly... and accuracy suffered. And I'm not just talking bulls-eye. I mean all aspects of accuracy.

The SIG on the other hand.... for me, at this point, it feels like I'm wearing my favorite pair of shoes or something like that. It inspires a ton of confidence. I feel like (and other people see) a better shooter when I shoot the 229.

The way pistols are designed.... there is always a trade-off between accuracy and reliability (including reliability without cleaning, torture-test mud/sand/water reliability). I think HK intentionally designed the USP with a little more focus on the reliability side than the designers of the SIG did. Both are very, very reliable... and both are accurate, but I think the SIGs are more accurate... the lock-up seems tighter, etc. That is just my view.

Here's a picture of the two together (and get the SIG, you'll be happier with it):

I quite enjoy shooting my USP 9mm. I had to get magazines with the extended baseplates similar to the P2000 grip issues to get a good grip for follow up shots. I have fairly big hands too. The hogue sleeve was also a must for the USP. I'm interested to see how it compares to the P30L. I'll keep my USP regardless right now as it is LEM.

Ghostie you got me all mixed up again!, I'll have to go try them out to be really sure, but I've seen a lot of threads where you recommend the Sig, and I think you are the one that made me look at the P229! I think, I want to love the USP, mainly because it is a beautiful gun. The Sig looked strange to me at the beginning, but the more I look at it and the more I start to like it.

when i got my 229 i went out, held both, played with both and shot both

the sig felt more natural to shoot, i shot it better and the grip was nicer, so i bought it

id like to compare the base model to the elite but with the recent jump in price it could be a while

I have a H&K USP in .40 w/ safety & decocker (Variant 1). It is an excellent pistol and is super simple to field strip & clean.

Both are great guns, I personally like the look of the USP compared to the 229.

Some people struggle with the barrel thing a bit... but they really do look great in person.. and most importantly, they shoot great.

Tell me these are not beautiful! (yes, trolls, that is a rhetorical question)

And... when you are shooting them... can you tell the difference between the Canadian version and the U.S. version?
