I've seen them self destruct at less than 1000 rounds.

So there doesn't seem to be a rough estimate of ronds the 552 will take prior to failing?

After 18 failures there must be some common denominator?

Is this only a problem with the 552 series or have you guys seen, herd of similar issues with the 550/1?

I highly doubt this could occur on our swiss arms rifles here in Canada, as I doubt we'll be putting our rifles under similar stress and wear in the same time periods.

That's only 18 failures that Kev's seen. The majority (probably close to ALL) of the 552s have broken at some stage.

No similar problems with the 551. I carried one on loan from SWAT a few years ago and I loved it. AFAIK there aren't any 550s in country. SWAT had the exact same problems with the 552s we had and we "repaired" them with spare parts from our broken weapons we were no longer using.

From what I understand, the "failure" is limited to full auto 552s. Of course, they're set up differently than the 550/551 series anyway.

It would seem that the problem is restricted to 552's and their return spring mechanism, which as you know was relocated from the op rod to the back of the receiver, like in the AK. The return spring guide rod rests against the rear wall of the lower receiver wall under spring pressure, but the steel plate that supports the rod has been known to snap during FA fire, allowing the bolt carrier to violently slam uncontrollably into the receiver. Thanks for the information fellas! Very interesting indeed. I find it hard to believe this probem wasn't noticed during initial testing of the 552. After reading an extensive article on how the 550 was tested, one would assume the 552 would undergo similar hardships. But I'm sure I'll find the answer to this in the link privided above.

Some Semi auto 552's in Finland had the same issues. Thought they had this problem nipped in bud, guess not.:(
