Hk 416 to M16FOW DI gas Short Barrel (11.5) Pictorial overview

004.jpg

Both weapons fired for over 1100 rounds (800 AA40 Frangible, and 300 rds M855) ea. No cleaning performed other than adding lube to the 11.5 DI gun three times. I am not trying to lead a horse to water in this – just to offer up the observations on this issue. The 10.3 was not fired in this aspect.
Weapons where shot semi-auto during a variety of drills, however no excessively rapid rates of fire where used, however the Hk416 was shot at a more rapid rate. Two ammo related stoppages occurred with the 11.5 DI gun (one poor crimped round got stuck in the barrel, and one head of a round was managed on feeding – both with the AA40 Frangible Blackhills load), one stoppage was noted in the Hk416 with M855 - failure to feed, USGI mag)

Weapons where stripped, and as to be expected the DI weapon immediately showed visible carbon build up

One issue to be noted – due to the round getting stuck and the bullet sticking in the chamber of the 11.5 gun, there was an abundance of ball powder accumulated – however it was absorbed into the carbon slurry and impossible to remove without a full cleaning so it was left in.

Cleaning the Hk416 took aprox 7 min – inc removing the handguard and replacing it. Cleaning the 11.5 DI gun took aprox 15 min – inc relubrication.
I am not going to comment on this beyond what I have posted initially, I will get back to this in due time ;)

So the HK required no maintenance while shooting while the DI got some anyways and in the end it takes more work to clean the DI then the HK. Obviously the cleaner HK is inferior...

I am curious as to how the HK manages to keep its piston so clean. I know that with my Swiss Arms I definitely don't save any time cleaning over my AR's.

Maybe because the head is shaped differently?

I like the firing pin spring too.

How easy is it to take apart the hand guards for cleaning?

What are the chances of any of us firing off 1100 rounds in one outing? Even if you did 15 minutes isn't much. I can't see myself shooting more than 300 max at one day on the range from one firearm and I clean my firearms after ever range trip.

Good write up.

I think you are missing the point of Kevin's overview.
Besides 1100 rnds is just a trip to the store and back for some in certain locations;)

I believe the 416 has a short-stroking piston system and does not require as long a cylinder as in the 550. Looks like most of the crud accumulates just behind the gas block. Good thread!

I don't think I am. It just confirmed to me that I don't need an expensive HK upper. DI will work fine for my needs and most likley 99 percent of the needs for most people short of a combat situation.

I think I got the point just fine. ;)

theres a screw type thingey near the bottom/rear of the handguard (just under the barrel, it "indexes" off of the barrel nut) that you take out, and the handguard slips off forewards.

easy as pie :D

As F22 said - the handguard just slides off -- the bolt lug is used as the screw driver

No loss of zero for rail mounted items either BTW

Holy ####, that's cool! I saw the recessed "ring" around the locking block area of the 416 barrel in one of the pictures, and speculated that was a switchbarrel system similar to that in the LMT monolithic upper.

I would LOVE to tear a 416 apart. I like knowing how things tick.

Too bad your not in Ottawa or Pet.

I may be out to Ft Lewis Wa. with my other employer on my next leave block - but not sure there will be any Canadian dates.

Not nearly as loud as those annoying Sig series guns...

DI guns still vent - they vent into the receiver and bolt carrier/bolt - a few Db issue -- but by and large as you know bullet flight noise is the predominant issue

mm ###xy lubed bolt.

I have to say I like the nice clean HK bolt, much much better than the DI one. the cleaning thing is overrated in my opinion.
