Hk416 to Direct Impingment

then get rid of the fugly cosmetics of the G36, and make it look cooler, say like an AR, and you'd have a winner!

I think a refined and improved AR-180 type action (incorporating frame rails and a positive means of preventing premature bolt rotation) built around an extrusion (single piece upper and trunnion!) and made to fit an AR-15 lower could be very successful. It's just a pretty generous design challenge.

Isn't this how the SA80 works? Sheet steel, pinned and spot welded.

The main reason I wouldn't buy a piston upper AR-15 in Canada is just the parts availabilty and general looking after it problems. Wasn't it in the Ottawa Citizen that there are less than 4,000 AR-15s in the CFC database? I think they were working from an extract of the database but let's say they were off by 100% and it's 8,000.

It's just too much hassle everytime some small part wears out or breaks getting your hands on a replacement. Even if it's legal to export without a DSP-5, a lot of US manufacturers are too afraid to do it anyway.

hehehe - the Hk coolaid team just got a few more converts today, most of the CGN mods and Admin...

After a day of shooting -- Reaper opened it up and saw a completly lubed bolt and carrier -- that was for all puposes carbon free.

Impressive to say the least, I don't know how many rounds were fired today through the 10.5 416 upper but it was a good mix of at least 300-500 rounds of RUAG, and a couple of hundred Wolf .223,and some mixed bag rounds. When I popped it open at the end of the day the bolt was still lubed and fairly clean.Even the carbon hidey holes such as the ejection port cover spring was clean.
Definitely was drinking the HK Kool Aide today, and loved every min of it,if I had the disposable income I would get one for sure,as I abuse the hell out of my AR's , my Colt LE Carbine has not seen cleaning since 2006,just moly grease for lube every now and then it still runs like a champ. The HK system is about the top of the heap of the AR FOW, gas gun or piston, one day I will ahve one, but will not be dropping the DI system just yet. In Afghanistan or Iraq... different story if one was available I'd snap it up.

DI guns still vent - they vent into the receiver and bolt carrier/bolt - a few Db issue -- but by and large as you know bullet flight noise is the predominant issue
We sound tested with a LW piston upper and no can would go below 142 dB. The limit for hearing safe operation is considered to be 140 dB. Switching to a DI upper we were down into the mid to low 130's with the good cans. Piston uppers may be clean but they suck for can use.

Bullet flight noise moves out and away from the operator so it really isn't a factor.

You looking at it from a simple numbers game -- the majority of reasons to use a piston gun is suppressed usage from an operator point of view -- DI guns burn off lube -- and suppressed they do it a a much greater rate.

From a shooter perspective max Dbsound suppression is low on the list of needs for the can, zero shift and durability run higher.

The Hk417 is built for suppression and as such has a 'few' improvements to increase the suppressability I think you would appreciate.

Just in case you guys were wondering, I happen to have a patent pending in this general field.

Its filed, but I can't disclose it's nature, as the USPTO has slapped a secrecy order on it. That means the US DOD is in the process of seriously considering if they want to say "#### you, Bartledan, this one is OURS!"

Of course, if they do that.... I do get some money...

I'm not a mod or admin....

But I wish I could have been there.
Trying new toys is always fun. :D
