HKG36 V.S. M16 Debate

I fired a G36 carbine recently while at a class 3 dealer in Maine. Even on full auto it never jammed- with a silencer!, and was very controllable in full auto, but I don't like the mag release, or the selector location. IMHO, the selector should be controlled by the thumb.

It is controlled by the thumb,I can reach it quite easily,as could all who I try out my G36,as long as you have a proper grip with the hand as far up the pistol grip as possible, most have had no problems reaching it.Of course if you have smaller than average hands it may be hard to reach,a some have said of the MP5 selector as well,I have had no difficulty with it either.

oh,..I must have been firing a lefty version?????? the selector was on the finger side.

I fired the G36 a few days ago with the local ETU. Didn't put enough rounds through is to comment on reliability, but it sure was light. The long top rail with a reflex sight was a welcome change compaired to the usually Ecan sight. And you have to love those clear mags that clip together.

The Hk416 anbd 417 is available for the CF and RCMP only at this time.

From Hk -- it will NEVER be avialable for civilian purchase unless it is built in the US.

The M16 is a damn fine weapon. Stoner designed it well. If it wasn't for a change of powder and not issueing cleaning instructions or kits during Vietnam, it would have a mostly unblemished record.

Back to the topic at hand...

...which I'd also have to say. It's hard to render any opinion when there are so few of the damn things out there. My opinion tends to be kind of superficial.

Someone with a good set of brains on there shoulders should make a VZ58 style piston upper for the AR style weapons. Very few parts involved and very reliable.

But Kevin is right when he says civilians probably wont take full advantage of any piston. But as we all know, us chairborne need to be ready in a moments notice with the best weapons, either in the mall, or as a space shuttle door gunner.

Ha ha, I like that.

And sorry if my previous post seemed off topic, but by saying Scarlett Johannsen v Jessica Alba I was trying to show that for civilian purposes there is very little difference in quality and reliability between the G36 and AR15. There may be features on both rifles that are better / worse than the other, but overall they are both extremely well made, accurate and reliable, IMHO.

Polymer does not stand up as well under extreme cold, plus I find the g36 more front heavy. Maybe I am too used to the AR but I like it best.

The Norwegian Armed Forces were trialling the G36, but had problems with them in extreme cold and sandy conditions. They opted to take their G3 to A-stan instead.

So are the polymers that hold the tails on 747's. Not all plastics are created equal - if the Norwegian army found the thing lacking, that's interesting, would like to see the report.
