HKP7 some restricted ........some prohibited

A totally over-rated auto that H&K refuses to make today. Abandoned production years ago. Why?

An unique design like the P9S, VP70Z, the HK P7 & P8 continues to extract loyalty for dubious reasons, while the prices of these autos have undeservedly reached Colt Python/Anaconda prices. Unobtainable due to excessive prices & short barrels, the P7's held their own in competition but at the back of the pack. Why? Because there are better designs for less money.

Delayed roller-lock gas operated blowback pistols have a place in history, but no body uses Georg Luger's P08, Wather's P38, Russian TT33's or Mosin's revolver for competition. Handgun evolution continues its forward march, weeding out inferior designs.....

While I do think that some of the prices have climbed beyond what they're worth, the classic H&K pistols from the late 1960s and 1970s are really interesting from a design point of view, which is hardly a "dubious" reason for enjoying them. Nearly everything today is a Browning-style tilting barrel action, and I own a bunch of different ones with that design, but they're all pretty much hammer-fired or striker-fired variants of same thing.

Yes, there are more modern (and cheaper to manufacture, which is the real reason H&K stopped selling them) designs today, but that does not detract from the good qualities that the older designs had (well, except for the VP70z, I'd have a hard time coming up with one there). My P9S Target has what may be the best single action trigger pull on any of the dozens of handguns I've owned. I can shoot my P7 more accurately fast than any other pistol I own. And my USP Expert 9mm was one of the most accurate pistols I ever owned. Just because you do not like them does not mean that the older designs don't have their merits.

I think you are missing the point. I would say P7 prices have far more to do with being collectible and scarce than their performance as a firearm. The same holds true for many higher priced guns from the past.
