So I got my tax return :dancingbanana:

I bought a Norinco 1911A1 form gunnar @ Armco......

I have about $1000 left..... less than $1100 but more than $1000

So I go into my local G-stroe and tell the owner to help me spend $1000....

I left the store with nothing in my hand..... I spent no money there at all...... I am soooo dissapointed in myself!

He has a Colt Gold Cup for $2249 and a Para 1911 Limited for $1349..... Thats about all I am interested in, at the local level anyway.... He aslo told me he has 12 more paras on the way, should be here in a week or so.

So I am saving my pennies for a Colt, I figgured at only 2 hundo more I can't go wrong with a gold Cup..... right?

Is there anything else out there I should be looking at? STI, Dan Wesson, Kimber..... etc.

I know its a colt, but is a colt still a COLT, or have they gone the way of most other things latley, higher price lower quality?

I need somebody to tell me what to do!!!!

I could buy a .22 conversion for my Norstinkco, and spend the rest on ammo..... but then I still only have 1 .45 and not 2.....

I belive in the sum/lots approach to things... "If some is good, Lots is better"

Cheers

hmmm....I'd buy another pistol. Two are better than one. If need some cash for ammo, buy a cheaper gun and spend the rest on ammo.

Thanks for the plug JohnnyMac...... It looks like something I'd be interested in...... just $350 out of my price range...... I could do $1050 Incl. shipping, it's a low ball I know, but thats all I got..... unless you want a slightly used M-213 with only one mag...... :D

Cheers

Notsorichguy... consider spending all that return on ammo for what you already have...

Or, Kimber custom II

I reload.... I have about 1300 rnds of 9mm left and about 10k of various others (incl. 7500 of .22lr)..... .22 is the only thing I can seem to find with any kind of regularity. I budget $250 a month to feed my addiction, and I have been having trouble spending it lately as I can't seem to find primers or powder.

I broke down and ordered 2K (.45) from Wolf Bullets..... I still haven't got them yet. I figgure if I can't buy powder or primers I might as well stock up on brass :D

I figgure while there is a drought on ammo & components I would just spend my cash on guns...... That is also one of the reasons I am considering a .22 conversion for the 1911. I seem to be able to find lots of .22.... so I have lots of it.

Cheers!

Oh yes you can. Colt's quality control is pretty inconsistent (it's been like since at least the 1970s). I've seen Colts with fit and finish that ranged from very good to horrendous. You don't want to spend $1500 in a pistol and find out it has an off-center recoil spring tunnel, leaning hammer, or misaligned slide to frame fit. If you're going to buy that Colt, inspect it thoroughly (PM me if you want a list of potential defects to look for).

Personally, I'd go with S&W, American-assembled Springfield, or STI Trojan. Kimbers and Brazilian Springfield are too inconsistent in quality (and unlike Colt, we are talking about functional rather than cosmetic issues), while Para Ordnance is just garbage.

I spent my refund on a Glock 17, not quite in the same boat as you, but loving it just the same. Next years refund probably be used for an M4

I had a Colt, wasn't that impressed with it for $1500, evenutally sold it. My Kimber is a fantastic gun, love it.

Get back in touch with Gunnar and pick up a STI Spartan. Best value in 1911 type pistols right now!!

I'm home sick today...... really!! I think I have the flu.... well I am sleeping a lot and all of my joints are sore and my head feels like a watermellon.... I took the wifes vehical in to get the winter tires off and the summer tires on.... Before I left the house I made some calls from a list I put togther last night...... Pretty much no kimbers in stock anywhere, the STI Trojans are nice but not quite what I am looking for (Gunnar is taking them to a G-show this weekend anyway)

So on the way home I stopped at my local g-store, armed with the list from capp325 (thanks for the info) the store wasn't very busy and I talked with the owner, and field stripped the Gold cup.... everything checks out 100%, I even got him down to $1400 and to agree to a 500 rnd/ 3month no hassel refund/exchange. I then took the Colt to the gunsmiths counter and pulled him away from a very important project (I am sure it was very important). I didn't know this but the smith shoots colt .45's competitavly..... He LOVES to work on them. He looked it over really well, then up and pulls out one of his custom colts..... what a nice piece! I ask him "whats that one worth" he says it s not for sale, He has 300 hrs into it and about $2000 into parts and what not. It started out as a fram and he worked from there. Then he tells me he feels he has anothe 75 to 100 hrs left to put into it..... I was shocked it looked and felt awsome....

Long story short I left the store $1050 poorer and only $850 away from owning the Gold Cup outright.

2 more checks (about 4 weeks) and its paid for and I can bring it home..... Just in time too I got some emails today...... My Norstinko is on the way & the 2000rnds of ammo I ordered from Wolf Bullets is on a truck speeding its way to me as well......

Everything is coming up Milhouse!!!!

Thanks for all of your thoughts, ideas and info...... I'll post pics and what not whenI have all my ducks in a row.

Cheers!

Gold Cup Update!!!!

So I went to my local G-store yesterday and tried to borrow a p-38 the owner owns, he told me I could borrow it this weekend..... Turns out his dad called dibs so I was turned away..... He did promise me next weekend, so we shall have to see.

Now for the good news......... As a consolation prize he let me take the Gold Cup that I put $$$ down on to the range for a meet & greet with the boys and 6 boxes of ammo........ Wow! What a great fella!

All told I put 400rnds down the pipe (about 378 actually). 200 - Blaser Brass 230gr. FMJ, 100 - CPM (Canadian Professional Munitions, factory reloads) 200gr Lead SWC and 100 - ??? 200gr Jacketed SWC (my buddies reloads I dunno the manufacturer). Not 1 FTF or FTE.... All the rounds went bang and fed like a greased pig.....

My buddy has a Para that he absolutly Adores! The jacketed SWC he brought out dosent feed worth a crap in his para.... probably 2 FTF per mag..... we didn't even try the lead in his para. The blaser shot well out of his Para..... I didn't shoot it a bunch (just 3 mags) as I was there to try out the CGC. I actually only tried his Para to compare.... you know apples to apples.......

Accuracy is better that I am, all the rounds hit the paper at 25yrds, and for sh**s & giggles we tried a mag at the 50yrd target, I actually got 4 of 7 on the paper. I am very happy with this Colt, I just have to get some more money together so I can bring it home.

When I went back to the g-store to drop it off, I looked through some books and I have already orderd a full length guide rod kit, it comes with 4 different springs, rod, buffers etc..... That is all I really want to do to it till I shoot it some more.

Oh yeah...... Pics!

I'll get some more pics up here when I get the Norinco and the CGC in the barn...... Till then you will have to wait..... just like me!

I like this Gold Cup so much...... I am actually considering trading in my M&P...... I must be feeling ill......!!! Just $350 more and she's all mine.

Cheers

Nice looking Colt. Congrats on your purchase. A word of advice though: stay away from full length guide rods. They do nothing for accuracy or reliability and just make the gun more difficult to strip. Buffers are also a waste of money and often have an adverse effect on reliability. You may want to buy different recoil springs though. From what I recall, Colts come with 16 lb springs from the factory. I'd go with 18 lb for factory ammo, and if you're planning to shoot mild reloads, get a 14 lb spring for that purpose.
