After a few years of being out of the HMR business...I have a new-to-me rifle on it's way. Really looking forward to it. Anyhow, grabbed a coffee last night, and headed down to Bass Pro thinking I'd grab some Hornady 17gr. and 20gr HPs to see what the gun likes most. Surprise surprise, they only had the 17gr., and one box of Remington Accu stuff for $20+. Didn't even look at the price of the 17gr. box and when I got to the check out, the total was just over $18. ($15.99 before tax if memory serves) Got home, went to put the ammo in the lock box and saw I already had 2 older boxes of HMR with their sticker price of $13.75. I knew ammo was in the $16 range before buying the rifle, but it's the first time I put a $ figure to the jump in price over such a short period of time. No regrets, but with the weak Canadian dollar...I wonder if it'll stay @ $16. Wonder what that CCI A17 ammo will end-up being for a box of 200.

What matters most is that this rifle is my new gopher shooter. :) If it likes the 17gr...and I hope it does..I'll be looking for good brick pricing in the Calgary area soon. :)
 
17 hmr is a grgreat 100yard round. I sold my butterfly hunter because the ammo is too damn expensive. Great round and really accurate in a savage 93r17. Price was just too much for me.
 
Hey guys~having had 2 Savage HMRs and a CZ452 Varmint in 17HMR, I figured I'd give Marlin a try. Also, as it will likely be a 7-days-of-use-a-year rifle, I wasn't interested in laying-out CZ $. As awesome as they are! :) Found a VERY low-mileage, North Haven 917 heavy barrel in the EE. Putting a Rifle Basix trigger in it, and my minty vintage/Japanese Bushnell Banner 6-18 AO. Additional 7-round mags are due in at my local dealer next week.
 
Cabela's put all there .17HMR ammo up to $19.99 a box now. Hopefully these prices drop soon. I remember when I got my first HMR the prices were around $16.99 per box then over the next few years they dropped right down to $8.25 per box at le barons. I never did make it down to the city before they jacked the price up again.

Nice good info here. I just got a new-to-me Savage and went out to the le Baron Mississauga for a bushnell banner and some ammo. I was thinking of the Vaughn bass pro. Le Baron had two types of winchester. 17 grain polymer tip for 13.50 and 20 grain jacketed HP for 13.25.

I only bought one box of each cause like you I want to see which one it likes better...

My next stop is Al's - have you been there yet?

I'm north of the city, so no quick way to get to Al's. They probably have HMR ammo, but I'd call ahead unless the store is local to you. Bass Pro only had the Hornady 17gr. V-Max, don't remember if they had Winchester but non of the 3 HMRs I've owned shot that well anyway. If I saw it there, I promptly ignored it. lol Your gun might like it, always worth a try. For me~HMR means Hornady ammo, but I always try to run CCI and Remington through to see what they prefer. I picked-up 1 box of the Hornady while I was there, and when locking it up at home...noticed I had 3 boxes of 17gr. in there already. Price on them~$13.75. Must have been sitting there a while!

Nice okay I've never shot a HMR and I'm not ever sure if I have ever seen someone else do it. This is why I only got a box. I am not too far from Al's and will head over there and see what they have. For some reason I recall when looking for .22LR when it was impossible to find, all they had was HMR. Of course, this might be a case of mis-remembering...
 
Love the 17 hummer. Best gopher gun I have shot in a long time. The 17gr tent sure does nice work

I sighted in my Savage MK II FV-SR in .17hmr today. It is a laser out to 100 yards with Federal Premium 17g. Sub MOA at 100 yards. From a bench and using a bi-pod of course.
 


Love shootin' the HMR whether it be dirt pigs or esplodin' water jugs. I use the hornady 20gr from lgs for $15.99 but seems to be the only place I can find 20 gr. and they group a little nicer in my gun.

I hope your Marlin 917 feeds better than mine. About 8 years ago I was in the market for a 17HMR and had it down to the Savage and Marlin but there were a few complaints against the Marlin with feeding issues. Apparently it would not feed properly unless you put some upward pressure on the bottom of the mag but if you put too much upward pressure it would also misfeed.

So I contacted Marlin and they assured me that there were never any problems and convinced me that all the new 917's would work flawlessly.

Well my new Marlin from Cabelas did exactly what the initial complaints were, so every time I have to press upwards on the mag to get to feed correctly. Other than this issue, the rifle is a tack driver but I should have bought the Savage.
