Hi guys,

Does anyone here currently own, or anyone shot a H+R/NEF Sportster?
I'm looking for real life opinions here related to the rifle- now that Marlin has bought NEF, wondering if the quality would be equal..

I know how accurate the HMR cartridge is, but what potential would it have from a scoped break action rifle such as the NEF? Any issues with the action lock-up causing random seating of the case and inconsistant groupings??

I've done an internet search- and the general idea is that this is a "gem in the rough" with a very strong following according to the Graybeard forum- SO, anyone here own/shot one and have comments to share?

I own a Sportster in 17HMR and it's a sweet rifle.
Handles well, more accurate than I'll ever be, mines got a nice trigger (I've heard others have crap ones).
No problems with the break action. The only issue, if you want to call it one, is the chamber gets dirty (really :eek: :rolleyes: ) and the case won't eject properly. Instead of getting smacked in the teeth with it, I have to manually remove the case.

I've owned a Marlin 17V, a Savage 93, and a Remington 597, all in .17HMR, and my H&R outshoots all of them. The trigger was very good out of the box and can be somewhat improved quite easily by the do-it-yourselfer. The gun is also super inexpensive. What's not to like?

Scoping can be tricky because of interference between the high hammer spur and the objective bell of the scope, but they come with a hammer spur that makes this a lot easier to deal with. The chamber will often benefit greatly from a bit of polishing with some Flitz on a patch wrapped around a brush and spun in the chamber with a hand drill. This usually improves ejection. I have heard that some of the newer H&R guns are coming with extractors only (no ejection of spent cases) but I can't say for sure.

The Graybeard web site has tons of useful information on accurizing and improving these guns. I think the H&R guns (all of 'em) are some of the best values out there in new firearms.

you won't be disapointed with the nef, i have a 45/70, 12 ga. tere awsome and i also have a sportser in 17hmr on the way
