hmr or wmr?

i am looking to do some longrange plinking. for me its a toss up between a .22wmr and a .17hrm. i have heard alot good about the .17hrm. trying to find info on the .22mag. i know its been around alot longer and greater bullet weights. the mag get less wind drift then the hmr but more drop. i am not going to be doing much hunting with it. except if i go to alberta to hit gophers. i would like to be able to hit cans at 200-300 yrds. i know alot of thats the gun and me. i would like to stay in the rimfires as its cheeper. just looking for input on practical ranges and what i can expect. i have yet to fire either cartridge.

any personal input would be great.

This is a verry old debate, but my 2 cents, .17HMR all the way. Much wider selection of ammo is available and rifles in the .17HMR are very reasonably priced. Get your hands on one and you will never look back. BTW, its like using a laser gun on gophers;)

Notice how much wind drift there is at 300 yards. Unless it is fairly calm, the cans better be big cans.
 
Hunting .. 22WMR .. Long Range plinking at cans and gophers .. 17HMR :D

I use a Savage 93 in 22WMR myself, had it for 6yrs now and has served me well. I have shot it out to 100yds but not any further, and my shots were dead on for that range. So anything longer I cannot attest to with that caliber.
 
I've been living this debate for 2 years now, and have bought/sold 3 rimfires to arrive at my conclusion~get both. :) Seriously though, for what you describe, I'd say...with no hesitation... .17 HMR is what you need. I think HMR was designed as a gopher-slaying round, so it'll serve you well. With any long-range shooting though, good glass becomes more critical beyond about 100 yards, especially with small targets. Get any Savage, heavy-barrel HMR and I's say you're good to go.
 
thanks for the input guys. i think that i am going to go with the wmr. in a cz452. as i do shoot grouse with my henry 22lr and it will be getting sold to fund this new intrest.( along with my browning silver 12gauge) i would like to be able to shoot for meat. from what i gather the hmr frags like crazy.

There is the 20 grain soft point ammo that shouldn't expand so rapidly. Maybe someone who has shot game with it can comment.
 
The hmr will be inherently more accurate but if you wish to shoot coyotes, beavers or other animals in the 30# and up range I would get the wmr. I do have an hmr and its stupid easy to put 5 rounds into a quarter @ 100 yrds.
 
I have a Zastava 22 wmr and so does a buddy of mine.
Both rifles shoot the Hornady 30gn ammo extreemly well. I shot a 5 shot group with his at 100 that was around the size of a quarter (didn't measure it),3 were touching. The other brands of ammo we tried didn't come close to this. I haven't shot mine at 100 yet but at 50 it makes a raged hole well under 1/2" with the same ammo. I haven't shot any game with it yet so I can't help with that.
If it shoots well out of your gun you might be able to head shoot chickens and bunnys !!
I do know large crap apples desintigrate when you shoot them.
 
You don't say what part of BC you are in. If you're the West Kootenays, PM me and we can meet up so you can try my 17. I don't have a WMR to compare it to, but at least it would give you an idea of what the HMR will do.
 
My 17 HMR will group sub MOA very easily at 100 yards, even in a good breeze.It also is a Savage 93 with a 6 to 20 Sightron.

Definitely go high on the magnification for your optics.Nothing like a gopher filling half the scope at long range.;)
 
well i just picked up
CZ 452 american in .22wmr, harris bi-pod, bushnell 3200 7x21x40 with paralax adjustment.
excited and happy just got to go out and shoot it.
