Hodgdon HS-6, pistol small primer. Are they the right choice for reloading .40S&W?

I am starting reloading for .40S&W. I want to use HS-6 power and CCI #500 small pistol primer as a start. Are those the appropriate choice?

Thanks.

I have used small pistol from federal, winchester and cci, they all work in my sig. Currently working my way through a few thousand cci 500's. I use hs6 for my heavyer loads, works great!

If your looking for light target loads you could also try tightgroup.

Oh I found one cci primer that looked a bit over filled, so I didn't load it:

I've been running titegroup with a WSR or WSP primer for 6 years now with no issues. HS-6 is better suited for comp'd 38 super guns. But if you can HS-6 at a good price and don't show any pressure issues have at 'er.

I'd go with 231 before HS-6. I started using 231 but I switched to TG for better consistancy and I was able to get a better bulk deal on it. HS-6 is a slower burning powder which is needed to get the most out of a ported pistol.
If you are using a 180gn bullet I would suggest 4 grains of 231 at an overall length of 1.2" if you are using a 1911 that has been free bored to accept a longer round. If you are not free bored or are using a smaller framed gun then I would suggest 1.135" starting at 3 grains and working up, with a 180grn bullet. When I used 231 I was putting in 5.5 gr under a 180gr bullet loaded to 1.2" and averaged around 970 fps out of a 5 inch 1911. If you ask the guys over in the action shooting forum about a good ".40 minor" load for your gun/bullet/powder setup you'll get some nice light loads.

Titegroup work well for me....

I use the HS-6 for my 9mm Major load (IPSC Open) and 38 Super....

Small pistol, really really no need for Rifle pistol with a normal Major 40SW Load.....
