Hodgdon HS-7/Winchester 571 in the .44 Rem Mag.

Hi all,

I just picked up an 8lbs tin of Winchester 571. I would like to use it to load for my Rossi 1892 clone .44 Rem Mag. but all my manuals have been published after it was discontinued. I do have a couple of listing for Hodgdon HS-7 which is identical to Win 571. Can anyone with older manuals please help me out? A pic or scan of the page would be great! Trying out the Hornady 240gr & 300gr XTPs as well as the Sierra 300gr JSP bullets.

I dug out my Lyman's 45th edition and there's no mention of Winchester 571 listed under .44 Rem Mag at all. Sorry, not much help, I know...

When in doubt, try to find out where it sits as far as burning rate. It's a lot more guess work, and you sure don't want to be redlining the ammo. Still, with the burning rate comparison you have a good ballpark idea of what your starting loads should be and where your experiment should end.
