I just zeroed my 50 cal at 100 meters with Hodgedon 777 and now I find out that I'm all out of 777 But I have plenty of Goex and Pyrodex in my store room. Does anyone know if I can substitute pyrodex ffg for triple 7 ffg without re zeroing? eg. same charge amount for both?
I used 60 gns of Hodgedon 777 and a R.E.A.L. bullet for a hunting load.
Can I use 60 gns of pyrodex and the same bullet without having to re-zero my sights? Thanks in advance,:)

Subtle changes can be significant. Don't count on it being the same zero. I would think you'd have to have a hell of a lot of luck to be able to switch powders and not have to re-zero.
 
You should never rely on conversions between powders. Its just not fair to the game you are hunting. Confidence in your equipment and your load is very important. Is it worth missing, or wounding a record book animal for the sake of re-sighting your gun, or waiting until you get more 777....i think not.

So far the only game I've hunted with my .50 is targets and you are right!
I won't hunt game untill I know what this baby will do and only after I become very familiar with it's trajectories. I'm just new at this black powder shooting and I'm wondering with Pyrodex or Goex, what grain should I start with if I want to duplicate the trajectories that I got with triple 7.

You need to increase your volume by about 15% to get the same velocity with loose Pyrodex as loose T7. With pellets the whole world changes because T7 pellets are not a true volume measurement but Pyrodex is.
 
Yup....15% is increase you would have to make to get you close to the 777 load. I noticed that you are only using 60gr of 777? How come so light? What gun are you shooting? Even in my old perc. gun, 80 grains was the lightest hunting load recommended. I take it this is for deer hunting? Let us know, and everyone will try to add their own preference.
 
Simple NO But you might get lucky every gun is different 777 will give more velocity for the same volume
