Hodgons Powder in Calgary

Hi guys,

Just got to the city and I am trying to track down some H4350. Found a couple places in town, but it seems very pricey(32$+) compared to the 26$/lb I used to pay back in Ontario. Just wondering what the go to places are for components in town.

Powder in Calgary

I absolutely refuse to buy powder from WSS in Calgary. They are trying to push collection of personal data for a product that currently does not require it. They can stick my business where the sun don't shine.

My go to for powder in Calgary is usually The Shooting Edge, or if I happen to be there, which is rare, Bass Pro Shops.

Problem with powder, like all gun parts and reloading gear, is supply. If I find it and it's $2 more a pound but it's the only store that has it, I will buy it.

I really like getting together with buddies and doing bulk orders through Higginsons. That is how you save money and get a supply that will last you.

You would be wrong. Powder sales are required to be recorded by the NRCAN Explosives regs. Some dealers are more diligent with this than others, depending on how things have gone in past inspections.

My experience with Bass Pro is that they are 10-20% higher priced on damn near everything firearms related, with reloading components no exception. Because of their pricing they often have stock when everyone else is out, though. YMMV.

I have been trying to stay on top of the PROPOSED changes the the NRCAN explosives act fiasco, but to my limited knowledge there is nothing currently in place regarding this. The document that was on the table and that is currently going through revisions already, would not have come into effect until December 2012.

I could very easily be wrong, but like I say I have tried to stay up to date with the explosives act changes. If I am wrong, please show us where this is currently listed in the act that is in force, i cannot find it.

and he is- russels was getting that data BEFORE wss bought them out- it's a nr can requirement- at one time you could buy your powder from wss just like any other purchase, whereas russels gave you the Book , but since the nrcan regs came in, and ufa co-op purchased wss, they've been VERY careful to follow regs and almost starving the business to death

You are now wrong twice. Current regulations that have been in effect for years already require a retailer to record your name and address when you buy powder.

Huh,

Ok, I have no problem being humbled and admitting I'm wrong, but I still do not see where this is stated. And why is WSS the only one doing it?

WSS, & Cabelas record my info every time i buy powder from them. If you want to know why other retailers don't ask, you'll have to talk to them.
 
One thing about the "powder book"; if it it wasn't for it I would have never realized how many people are named John Hancock and Allan Rock. Address is seldom more than the name of a town. Ottawa fits in there nice, but putting Saskatoon down in Saskatoon or Calgary when in Calgary hardly narrows it down.


About the only thing that is right is the date and the pounds.

Not at WSS Calgary, they ask for ID to get a correct name. The book at Russell's had a lot of Pierre Trudeau, James Bond and so on in it, though.

I have no problem purchasing gun powder and giving the retailer my name and address. I've been doing it for a long time, along with the long gun registery and I have had no problems of any sort. WSS is the best place in Calgary to purchase reloading supplies followed by The Shooting Edge and then Proline Shooters. If they don't have anything that I desperately need, then I contact Doug Rayner (Rayner Shine Business) from Lancer, Saskatchewan.
